The snow is falling gently outside the window.

Leaning against the cool glass, you look out at the white flakes slowly falling, dancing in the cold wind that slows down their descent.

Your bento is on the desk in front of you on your desk, the last onigiri untouched. The sight of the snow somehow sparks a melancholy ache, and your appetite has long disappeared.

The fluttering snowflakes, you suddenly think, are very much like him. Perfect, beautiful, gentle…

…and yet so untouchable.

You should tell him how you feel, Suzuka often chastises. How will he know if you never say anything?

But you are reluctant to let the bottled-up feelings spill out of your mouth. Afraid that those words might completely ruin even the bonds of friendship between you two.

Just like the snow. So tempting to touch, and yet the moment you do, it melts away and disappears forever.

It’s better to just stay silent, you’ve decided since a long while ago.

It’s better to let him remain clueless. To just cherish the little moments when he plops down next to you, all smiles, and starts talking happily, not noticing as you subtly lean against him; or when you offer him the strawberries that you sometimes have in your bento and he accepts them with a careless cry of You’re the best, Mirai-chan! I love you! before disappearing; or when you sprawl on the classroom floor with him drawing out mindmaps and posters for class presentations and his hand rests casually on yours, warm and comforting.

Your gaze flickers from snowflake to snowflake as you watch their erratic spiral down to the ground.

Suddenly, a tap on the shoulder makes you jump in surprise, and you whip around to see Umika smiling there.

Not hungry? she asks, indicating the onigiri in the bento box.

You shake your head, and gesture for her to take it. She does so, and sits on the chair in front of you, turning to look at you from across the table while chewing on the rice and seaweed.

You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you, says Umika, her tone indicating that this is a statement and not a question.

You say nothing, but your expression gives you away and Umika sighs.

You’ve got to tell him eventually, she says, before you break inside.

You reach for the lid, and close your bento box, pretending not to hear her. She sighs, and reaches over to her table for her lab coat and textbook, having finished the onigiri.

Suit yourself, she says dryly, I’m going for Chemistry.

She stops for a brief moment to converse with Chinen, who ends his conversation with Nakajima and gets up to follow her to the lab.

She’s lucky, you think to yourself, to be able to love someone like Chinen, who can love her in return. That she can be able to confess her feelings to the one she loves every day, and never have to fear the pain of rejection.

Quietly, you put away your bento and pick up the things you’ll need for the next lesson, before heading out of the classroom.

Light footsteps sound behind you, and soon Suzuka appears and falls in beside you.

So, she says, extremely persistently - more so than even Umika -, when exactly are you going to confess your feelings for Yamada-kun?

Never, you say in a resigned voice, for what must be the hundredth time. It seems that Suzuka never gets tired of getting the same answer for the question that she asks thrice a day.

But you like him, don’t you? Surely you wish for him to return your feelings.

He’ll never return them, you say jadedly, why would he? There are so many other girls who are much prettier and smarter than me.

Suzuka rolls her eyes.

So you’re just going to stew with those feelings? she asks skeptically.

You nod.

And if he actually likes you too?

He would never like me, you try to explain to Suzuka, he’s such an accomplished guy, he’s got fans everywhere. I’m just a random actress.

You receive a raised eyebrow, and you continue in a softer voice.

But I’d give the whole world, if only he would like me back.

You miss Suzuka’s smile as you step into the Chemistry lab ahead of her.

~

Mirai-chan, a familiar voice calls as you pack your bag for the day.

You look up, and meet his eyes.

Yes? you say, suddenly extremely nervous.

He bites his lip, and fidgets around, before suddenly thrusting a pink post-it at you.

I don’t want the whole world, it reads, unless you’re there with me.

You raise your head and blink confusedly at him.

I…actually like you too, he says, slightly embarrassed.

But how do you know I said this? you ask, bewildered.

He looks sheepish.

I heard Ohgo quoting it really loudly to Yuto, he admits.

You feel a sudden urge to hunt down Suzuka and throttle her, but you clamp it down, as your cheeks begin to burn pink.

You…mean it? you hesitantly ask, extremely afraid that he’ll deny it and laugh it off, making your heart crack and shatter into a million pieces.

After all, this seems too perfect to be true.

When he nods and smiles a little, you pinch yourself, to make sure this isn’t a dream. You bite down a yelp as your arm is pinched.

No, this is definitely reality.

Your heart suddenly fills with happiness and relief, and you throw yourself at him, flinging your arms around his neck as you cry in joy.

He brings his arms to encircle your waist, and the two of you stand there for a while, in the middle of the classroom, intertwined together as time seems to stop just for the both of you.

And suddenly, the snowy winter day doesn’t seem so cold anymore.
