Yamada sank down into the soft cool grass on the hilltop. Night had long fallen, and the atmosphere was quiet except for the crickets chirping as he sat still and stared at the sky, hands resting on the cool green blades of grass.
“Hey,” he murmured, “sometimes, I still wonder: Can you feel my heartbeat, my presence? For me, I can feel you beside me all the time, even when you’re not by my side. I wonder, is it the same for you?”
There was no reply, only the silent silver wind gently ruffling his messy hair.
But then again, he wasn’t expecting a reply.
Leaning back and shifting his weight to his hands, his eyes flickered as they darted from star to star, contented sigh escaping his lips.
“I miss you,” he said at last, and the words hung empty in the air.
“It’s been what, five years already, hasn’t it? Every day…every night…I guess you wouldn’t know how much I miss you.”
A tiny smile crossed his face, as the memory of a sunny smile appeared in his head, image fading after five years of constant replay.
If you were here, I wonder what you’d look like now, he thought, but yet, all I have is an outdated memory.
It hurt. His heart hurt to think like that.
“Do you remember,” he started, to change the depressing mood a little, “when we first met? I was so insecure, so afraid to face the world. But then you came and changed me, you made me into who I am today. I realize now…I never did thank you for that, did I?”
But I guess it’s a little too late now.
Sighing, Yamada stood up to go, brushing lingering moisture from his hands.
“I guess I’ll go home,” he murmured, “and I’ll probably dream of you again tonight. Is this some kind of sign? I can feel you with me, and I still see you…I guess this means that you’re still by my side.”
His sneakers scuffed the ground, reluctant to leave.
It’s been ages now, ever since you turned into a star. I can’t touch you anymore…
His shadow disappeared over the crest of the hill, as the moonlight shifted to illuminate the hilltop.
...so tell me, show me somehow, just like you promised…will you still be by my side forever?
Pale silver moonlight shone upon the small stone embedded in the hill, shadows thrown in relief along the engraved letters.
Rest in Peace…
Okamoto Keito.
