Nobody knew why, but Hikaru was in a strangely bad mood when he stomped into the rehearsal room. So JUMP, being the nice considerate bandmates that they were, simply left him alone to stew.

“Eesh,” Hikaru muttered, flipping through the pages of an older issue of Duet during break, “Keito, you smile weird.”

Keito looked up from where he was reading, a safe distance away from Hikaru, and blinked.

“It’s true! It’s like, crooked. And you totally don’t look happy enough. And-”

Inoo darted up and clapped his hand over Hikaru’s mouth.

“Ignore him,” Inoo whispered hurriedly, before yanking Hikaru away to BEST corner.

“…It’s okay,” Keito murmured, a quiet reply to empty air.

~

Inoo watched Keito get up from his chair and leave the rehearsal room.

“You idiot,” he hissed under his breath to Hikaru, “why did you do that?”

“…It was the truth,” Hikaru muttered sulkily.

Inoo groaned, and smacked Hikaru’s head hard, ignoring the pained whine of protest.

“Next time you’re PMS-ing, please remember to think about others.”

Hikaru flinched under Inoo’s glare.

“Keito is still struggling with self-acceptance issues,” Inoo’s last whisper came.

~

Drips of water from a leaking tap in the corner.

He reached out to softly trace the smile in the mirror. It was slightly crooked, and as he tried to smile harder, the only thing he succeeded in doing was making it look incredibly forced.

“I guess he’s right.”

A bitter laugh, as his breath fogged up the glass. With a shaking finger, he reached up and drew a simple smiley-face.

Why am I this affected?

~

“He did what?”

Inoo flinched at the tone of Yuto’s voice.

“Inoo,” Yamada began, voice always one of perfect calmness and rationality, “can I bash Hikaru’s face in?”

“I’d prefer it if you didn’t. I think everybody would like Hikaru with his face in one piece.”

Yuto sighed.

“Yama-chan,” he said quietly, “let’s go find Keito.”

~

The heavy door banged open.

“Keito!”

The aforementioned boy looked up, and blinked in surprise.

“Yama-chan,” he said quietly, “Yuto. Why are you guys here?”

Yuto saw the smiley-face drawn on the mirror, slowly fading away, and put the pieces together.

“You know Hikaru was just spouting nonsense, right?”

“It’s not nonsense if it’s true, isn’t it?”

Yamada frowned.

“Keito, look at me.”

The older boy slowly turned his head to meet Yamada’s gaze.

“Listen,” Yamada said softly, “I think you have the most perfect smile in the world.”

“It’s not-”

“It is,” interrupted Yuto, “Do you know why I love it when we’re paired up for the radio show? It’s because when you smile or laugh, I can feel all my worries just melt away. Even if I’m feeling like the worst person on earth, it doesn’t matter when I see you smile.”

Keito looked away.

“Really?”

Yamada nodded emphatically.

“Keito, your smile makes everybody else around you smile as well. Trust me.”

In a sudden move, Yuto stuck out his two thumbs and pushed the corners of Keito’s mouth up.

“Smile, Keito. Smile!”

The situation was so hilarious that Yamada cracked up of his own accord, and soon Keito was grinning ruefully as he watched the younger boy lean against the toilet cubicle walls, giggling and hiccupping.

He didn’t notice when Yuto removed his thumbs from his face.

“There,” Yuto said, satisfied, “You should smile forever, Keito.”

Yamada, having recovered from his fit of giggles, walked over to the mirror. He breathed onto it, and wrote a single line of messy kanji on it. Keito read it, and smiled.

“Thanks, guys.”

Yuto grinned, and slung his arm around Keito’s shoulders.

“No problem~”

They left the toilet, a single line of kanji slowly fading away on the surface of the mirror.

Your smile makes the whole world smile, so never ever think you’re alone, okay?
