Medication is supposed to have many benefits. A practicing Buddhist in one of my classes said that whenever someone new showed up to meditate (they did individual and group meditations, I guess? I don't really know how each sect operates), you could see a change in them in a very short time. Maybe a few weeks or a month. I kept meaning to try it, but it's very difficult to set aside some time to just sit without falling asleep.
