I'd guess that either the english version says kaworu or they are only spelling from hearing. But I wouldn't know.

check 3.4.2 here for the explanation of the "w" which is apparently so confusing.

I became attatched to the old english subtitles, but i believe the correct Japanese spelling is indeed Kaworu
