Silicone Casting Fail

First silicone mold making attempt = fairly decisive failure. Fancy Silicone Platinum from Tap Plastics is too liquid for this project. Craft foam density is less than Silicone. Hence, it floats rather than sits at bottom of poured Silicone mixture. Not useful. Have flipped sculpt upside down to float on surface and attempt mold that way. Suspect ( Read more... )

So if I'm clear...the master (made of craft foam) is basically floating on top of the mold stuff?

An idea, if you want to try it...take the side that is least vital and tape it down to the bottom of your container. D did this with a couple of molds that he made to minimalize the amount of material he'd have to cut away after the mold was done to remove the sculpt. It'll require that your container have a very flat bottom with no curves where your mold is, but it's an idea :)

Yeah, that is precisely what I am thinking of doing. :) That, and not use the super expensive and super-liquid RTV Silicone. The basic works just fine and also has a bit more weight. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Not a problem :) And we now have an idea of how the more expensive silicone mold stuff is too. D and I were looking at it, but since he's new to casting, he wanted to go with a lower price investment.

I think it will probably be GREAT for some projects. It dries faster, it is a 1 to 1 ratio, which is nice, and it is more flexible.
