Hmmm. I'd say this is a toss-up between:
- A tiny white dot had reappeared at the end of the painted tunnel, and now Ariana was walking back towards them, growing bigger and bigger as she came. But there was somebody else with her now, someone taller than she was, who was limping along looking excited. His hair was longer than Harry had ever seen it: he appeared to have suffered several gashes to his face and his clothes were ripped and torn. Larger and larger the two figures grew, until only their heads and shoulders filled the portrait. Then the whole thing swung forwards on the wall like a little door, and the entrance to a real tunnel was revealed. And out of it, his hair overgrown, his face cut, his roves ripped, clambered the real Neville Longbottom, who gave a roar of delight, leapt down from the mantelpiece and yelled, 'I knew you'd come! I knew it, Harry!' (page 459 in my copy.)
This scene is an amazing reintroduction to a Neville who has become a hardened, capable leader. I love the contradiction between Neville's ragged, 'adult' appearance, and the childlike glee inherent in his cheering for Harry Potter.
2. 'It's not a case of what you'll permit, Minerva McGonagall. Your time's over. It's us what's in charge here now, and you'll back me up or you'll pay the price.'
And he spat in her face.
Harry pulled the Cloak off himself, raised his wand and said, 'You shouldn't have done that.'
As Amycus spun around, Harry shouted, 'Crucio!'
The Death Eater was lifted off his feet. He writhed through the air like a drowning man, thrashing and howling in pain, and then, with a crunch and a shattering of glass, he smashed into the front of a bookcase and crumpled, insensible, to the floor.
'I see what Bellatrix meant,' said Harry, the blood thundering through his brain, 'you need to really mean it.' (page 477.)
As you may have gleaned from both of my Favourite Character posts, I love it when a character is morally grey. Because you have to ask the question, is it okay that Harry did this because Amycus was a child-torturing, prejudiced, homicidal maniac, or has Harry just sacrificed his integrity over revenge? I think this is an interesting moment for Harry, because he makes his decision and he doesn't regret it. He's come a long way from GoF, when he was horrified by what 'Moody' was talking about in class.
3. Fred's death. I can't even bring myself to type the scene out. I will cry buckets of tears in the theatre.
4. The Prince's Tale. (page 529-553.) No way am I typing out a whole chapter. It is the most re-read part of DH for me. When I first read it, I felt, I don't know, vindicated to have incontrovertible proof that I'd been right all along about Snape. I think his love for Lily made him into a character the reader could sympathize, as opposed to pity (which was accomplished with the scene in OotP where he is bullied by James.) I've talked about my love for Snape already, so I'll let that go for the moment.
The other thing this chapter accomplishes is to fully illustrate Dumbledore's genius. Although we've always known he was brilliant and powerful, we never knew just how informed he was, or just how magnificent a tacticien/politicien he was. I loved the glimpse this chapter gave into his alliance with Snape (I wouldn't quite call it a friendship, honestly,) and also of him outside of his 'benevolent old teacher' persona.
5. He pressed the golden metal to his lips and whispered, 'I am about to die.' (page 559)
This whole scene, really. I will cry so fucking hard. Sirius, Lupin, James and Lily... Harry. Jesus Christ, Harry.
6. (ONE LAST ONE I PROMISE)
In one swift, fluid motion Neville broke free of the Body-Bind Curse upon him; the flaming Hat fell off him and he drew from its depths something silver, with a glittering, rubied handle --
The slash of the silver blade could not be heard over the roar of the oncoming crowd, or the sounds of the clashing giants, or of the stampeding centaurs, and yet it seemed to draw every eye. With a single stroke, Neville sliced off the great snake's head, which spun high into the air, gleaming in the light flooding from the Entrance Hall, and Voldemort's mouth was open in a scream of fury that no one could hear, and the snake's body thudded to the ground at his feet -- (page 587)
Love this for two reasons:
a) You go Neville! ILU bb <3
b) FUCK YEAH THAT SCARY-ASS SNAKE IS DEAD \o/
So that's the options. And I can't choose. So. I'm cheating and saying I'm anticipating all of them in the movie.
