Day fourteen: What you think makes the Harry Potter series so amazing
I'm going to be brief in this one, because I don't have much to say. For the most part, the casting has been brilliant. I couldn't possibly see anyone other than Alan Rickman playing Snape, or Helena Bonham Carter (flawless human being, omg) playing Bellatrix, or Maggie Smith playing McGonagall. And I think we can all agree that Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are perfect in every way in their respective roles. So as I said, I'm happy with just about every cast member in this series.
That said, there are a few actors that I think were illsuited to their parts.
- Bill Nighy as Scrimgeour: I'd like to preface this by saying that I quite like Bill Nighy. I think he's a good actor, and he's not on this list because I think he sucks. I just don't think he resembles the Scrimgeour from the books very much at all. He doesn't resemble 'an old lion' at all, nor a grizzled veteran. I thought he looked rather like a member of the aristocracy who, although he was a badass, had never actually fought a day in his life. He just didn't work for me at all, so I guess it's a good thing his part was so short.
- Bonnie Wright as Ginny: She looks the part, for sure, and her chemistry with Daniel Radcliffe is decent, but she's just not a very good actress, imo. The scene in the Room of Requirements was awful (and weirdly written. Actually it was just weird.)
- Michael Gambon as Dumbledore (in the third/fourth movies): So I actually quite like his Dumbledore, particularly in the later movies, because he was sort of world-weary and grim and it suited the mood of those movies. However, in these earlier movies, where Dumbledore is still a merry, harmless looking old chap who you could hardly believe is the most powerful wizard in the world, his performance didn't mesh with how he is written in the books. Also, he was cast after, mmm, I think it was Richard Harris, who was PERFECT as Dumbledore in the early movies, so that was a hard act to follow. I guess Gambon is only partially included in this list.
So, out of seven movies, those are the only casting choices that I can think of at the moment that I've found questionable. That's a pretty damn good success rate, wouldn't you say? Of the three, I'd say Bill Nighy as Scrimgeour was my least favourite, because for all that I don't like the character of Scrimgeour as a person, I found him very interesting in the books, the ways he was different from Fudge and yet still tried to manipulate Harry and the wizarding world all the same. I always thought he cut a rather dramatic figure, and I was expecting him to be a little more ragged.
What was your least favourite casting choice?
