Efficiency & Inefficiency at the same time...

Last week I was roaming around Mumbai to get my IBM laptop fixed, was going in a Bus to BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex). I noticed innumerable auto rickshaw's on the road. So much inefficiency!!! More than 19 auto rickshaws out of 25 i counted, were having just one person on board. This is ridiculous ( Read more... )

You are welcome to the less developed areas of the country like Bihar where no body hires a single rickshaw..its always shared (which is essentially your proposition)..however, sharing is a function of economic standing of people and I doubt people of richer states would want to sit together in an auto. By the way, even in Mumbai, share taxis run in the Church Gate area.

yea i know...shared rick's are also there in BKC (From BKC to Kurla station). I propose to just regularize it, make it more formal and easier...
and i don't think people in Mumbai care about rich/poor at least while traveling in trains/rick's!

The buses in Mumbai which are quite well networked and frequent are half as crowded as the trains. Still demand for Autos exist. Wat makes u think that creating 'shared' autos will make overall transport more efficient. Transport cant be made more efficient without changing the attitudes of the citizens.

Singapore runs on a similar basis where taxis have a signboard which says that if they are busy or not.. also all the taxis are coordinated by wireless recievers to see where the passengers exists and are directed to the spot .. instead of wasting fuel and time roaming around places where there is no demand.
To make this sustainable and making sure that the everyone works on the same MODEL .. the singapore govt has given the taxi control to only one client called SMRT to maintain .. the taxis which are fitted with the required controls are rented out to drivers at $100 a day .. so the effeciency of the taxis are montinored and maintained at a central point
but the sharing of 3 to 4 people is something which is not yet done in singapore also :)
