Woaw k dude, you never told me it was SHUTTING OFF when you asked me about it earlier. This is totally something different. The only reason why your lappy would be randomly shutting off randomly (aside from a dying battery) is because it must be overheating. It's a common system protection method called "thermal throttling", where the BIOS forces a shutdown once the processor gets to a certain temperature before the poor little chip starts to burn up. Normally the fan, coupled with (on desktops anyway) a heat sync, are able to keep the processor at nominal temperature. Every once and a while stuff might get into the compy or lappy's little air holes, which'll eventually clog the damn thing up, making it not so easy for the hot air to escape. This is often how a system overheats, and when it does, the overall performance of the system will most likely be lowered, until it gets to the point where it just shuts off.

Formatting is not going to fix that. You're going to have to find a way to get whatever dust bunnies got in there out.
