While the pencil marks can make a pleasant look, I think more smudging would make the shadows on the facial planes look better. Especially with the more smooth look of the goggles and the hair.
Thanks for the critique, and yes, that's very true. I should've stuck with one style or the other; Hatching or shading. My struggles with the hair rather threw off the whole balance! I'll stick back to shading for my next illustration.
Glad I was helpful and in retrospect, sorry for not pointing out the positive aspects as well. Sometimes it seems those parts are just so obvious in my head that they aren't worth mentioning, while the critique was something I had to think on more, and thus was what seemed worthwhile to write out. But to state the obvious- yes, great drawing. And alternating or choosing between hatching and shades can be a beeyotch. (I currently struggle with this in a semi-anime style comic I'm working on, trying to reason out what I should hatch with ink and what I should just leave to the computer toning later on.)
Heh, not a problem, I'm often at a loss on what aspect I should focus on first when reviewing someone's artwork online, without having gone through a whole person-to-person presentation aspect of the artwork. Thanks for finding the artwork as such, as rushed as I find it now in hindsight! I felt really compelled to post something though, to get myself into the thicket Death Note communities while the series is still so fresh in my mind

I think I'm seeing a little adjustment needed on the left eye, but nicely done! Nice job smoothing out the hair. I'm rather amused about how the original looked like Light, because I did this one of Light that turned out badly:
Thanks for viewing and commenting! I'm glad you liked it. His left, correct? Oh, that's rather odd, I didn't even notice that he had what seems to be a bottom eyelid. Huh. That's very observant, thanks for spotting it.
Their haircut looks spectacularly similar, to me. Your Light looks meaner than my Matt/Light confusion, heh.
Merci, you're too kind! So the dubious nature of my ranting does bring results! I should create an ad campaign to that general tune, and post it everywhere in the flotsam of Internet! "Schemeness ranting = some results," say they. But I'll not do this while I'm sober.
And I added you back because I'll flavor my future introductions of myself with the beloved description of "near-malapropisms" that you'll want royalty for it. Just so that you can easily keep tabs of me for partial profit, when the time comes. :)
Additionally, I scrolled down a few paces and realised that I recognise your mention of Pacific Mall. Therein this thought easily occurred to me: "Oh, crisis, I probably ripped myself off by spending $40 at Spadina and Dundas on Second Note: The BB serial murder cases." What an eerily small world we inhabit!
Not a worry about not critiquing my sketch, it's my very secret plan to get conversations going which may very well not relate to my sketch at all!
Hehe, gosh, I didn't sound so sober when I was writing that last comment to you, at all. But then, I cleared a good portion of my chocolate pantry yesterday, as my obsession with dark chocolate mimics that of Mello's -
I placed an order for the shipment at Kikiwai Anime at "Chinatown Centre", which is a mall, but a block or two south of Dundas. I should get it by mid-February.
Yep, the book's in Japanese, of which I don't know a word of. I figured that it's high time for me to buy some Death Note merchandise though!

I am not artistically inclined, so I have nothing to contribute to the critique of your drawing. Sorry. :(

Where did you buy the book? (I didn't see it at PM, actually.) At the little mall on the corner of Spadina/Dundas? The book's in Japanese, right?
*excited*
