30-day meme!

Feb 01, 2010 19:08

Hello, friends.  I keep saying I'm going to post something, and I do read my friends page occasionally, but I can't ever really think of anything substantial to post, so I never get around to it.  I've been busy (second year of med school, in other words when everyone disappears into the library and is never seen or heard from again, co-directing our free clinic, de facto moving in with a man I fully believe to be the love of my life - more on that later), but nothing about which I think I'd be able to write an interesting entry.

So, I'm going to ease back into LJ-dom by completing this meme I took from labrt2004  and blue_rhapsodies.  (30 days from now I'm sure I will feel that "ease" was not the correct way to describe this.)  Here's what I will be posting:

My favorite song?  Hmm.  I do listen to songs (in the literal sense) sometimes, mostly of the saccharine, embarrassing variety, but my favorites of those tend to change frequently, since I'll listen to something ad nauseum for a couple days (on repeat while running or, if I can sing along, while in the car) and then never want to hear it again.  So I'm going to assume that I can be asked about my favorite song-in-the-colloquial-sense, that is, piece of music.

I have two - both classical, both admittedly still a bit saccharine.  The first is Grieg's piano concerto in a minor.  Back in the day, when I had time to take piano lessons and was half decent at it, I played this.  I was nowhere near as good as I should have been, but it's still a stunningly beautiful piece of music that bounds between powerful and playful, buoyant and brooding.  More than anything, it reminds me of how much fun it was to be able to do that.  As much as I loathed practicing (how many hours I spent with a book or magazine propped up on the music stand to read while I was playing so I could distract myself and "test my memory" [ha!] at the same time!), I miss it.

The second is "Meditation" from Massenet's opera "Thais."  No big explanation, it's just beautiful.

That's it for now; see you tomorrow!
