When Wikipedia is Wrong

The reasons that I am not not not a fan of undergraduates citing Wikipedia are many. One of these reasons is that Wikipedia is often just plain wrong.
For example, in the article on Opium, in the section describing the history of its use, we have this lovely line: "Opium became stigmatized in Europe during the Inquisition as a Middle Eastern ( Read more... )

On the other hand, Wikipedia does have its areas where it's incredibly informative. For lots of pop-culture references, especially things like TV shows and movies, Wikipedia often has a lot of great information.

Oh, I'm not denying that it's not informative, but in areas that are especially prone to the Dunning-Kruger effect, it's really problematic because there are times when people are incapable of judging their own expertise.
