Things that Embarrass me

Back when I was 18, I read Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. That doesn't embarrass me.
What embarrasses me is that I saw nothing at all objectionable about the fact that the villains of the story are an army of black cannibals (with hippies serving as the brains of the outfit). How did I not realize that was awful at several ( Read more... )

That's not how I've pictured them all this time. My 'mental movie' has the cannibal hordes being fairly mixed. I last read the book over a decade ago, and the 'movie' dates back over two decades. If Niven & Pournelle explicitly mentioned skin colours for most of the characters then I missed it. Which probably says more about how poorly I read than the novel's racism…

Hm...I knew Niven belonged to the crazy libertarian survivalist wing of the science fiction community, but I wasn't aware he had racist inclinations.
