You know you live in a bizarre world when you see that many people spend their free moments filling in the multiplication tables to weirdly-constrained, order-9 quasigroups all the while claiming that the task requires "no math".

I went to a seminar meeting on spectral sequences today, where they tried to encourage people to give talks by claiming they were "like sudoku, only more fun".

Make almost anything an obsessive-compulsive game (crosswords, sudoku, Katamari Damacy, and people suddenly claim it is just fun and that no thought is involved... :-P

It's weird because thinking can be pretty fun. School really screws people up for the joys of learning. They still like learning stuff, but they think they don't.

it's a shame that the wisest amongst us are those least likely to say what they think, knowing how much they don't know. really, it should be the reverse. so yeah, post more.
