Thanks for doing this! A two questions. Firstly, how does it occur to you to make icons like this? (does that make sense?) And, what does de-saturating the layer do? At the moment my photoshop is playing up so I haven't actually tried this yet, so maybe I shall annoy you with more questions once I have. :p
I don't really know, actually. I just play around with the layer settings and textures until I find something I like, even if I end up with five layers in the end.
Sometimes I'll start off knowing how I want an icon to look based on excellent icons I've seen in the past, but the final product usually looks completely different.
Desaturating an image makes the image grayscale. I have PS7 and the Desaturate button is located under Image >> Adjustments >> Desaturate or Shft+Ctrl+U. You can also adjust how gray an image is by fiddling with the Saturation button under Image >> Adjustments >> Hue/Saturation or Ctrl+U.
