Yes, but I thought maybe I was being overly simplistic, and missing some more elaborate parallel involving actually knowing stuff about the Pope and current events and stuff...

Well, I have serious problems with some of his policies, and having known about him before he was Pope, when I saw he'd been elected, my first response was, "Oh, shit, not him." Although he's not proven nearly as bad as I originally feared. Then again, Palpatine's first few years as Chancellor weren't particularly laden with evil either.
