I’ve had some time now to settle into my new program. I miss hanging out with my cohort, whom I unfortunately see little of now. They’ve got a lot of work for themselves although I think we might be able to occasionally do stuff again in the fall. For the first time this summer I’m going with the guys of the cohort this weekend to a Reds game, which should be nice. It’s as a bachelor party for David, one of the group.
The type of program I transferred to is highly self designed. There are only a few courses that are required. Of the eight classes I’m taking between now and fall, five of them are statistics, two are education theory and one is evaluation of health classes in schools. In November I’ll apply to public health graduate programs.
Also news is that next summer I will be going to Beijing, China for three weeks as a class. I’m all about seeing new places. I’m also going to try to learn some Chinese, although my success thus far has been pretty shitty. I was doing far better with Spanish. I’ve been watching some documentaries on China and have been rather unimpressed with their freedom of speech. It will be interesting to see what it is like seeing the country first hand. Naturally, I had my friend Doug teach me Chinese chess, so I can play other people in the parks.
My classwork so far has been not too bad, although I have been terrible on procrastination. I have become absolutely addicted to documentaries and can’t stop watching them as I have now found websites were I can easily access them for free. I think I need to do more work at the library. Unfortunately it’s been raining a lot lately, so I’ve biked back right after class to avoid getting too wet.
My mom’s husband died recently. The wording of that sentence likely sounds strange, but to imply that he was of relation to me even as a stepfather sounds exceedingly more bizarre. He was 50 and his death appeared the result of excessive daily smoking and drinking. He treated his body pretty badly. While he did provide my mom with companionship and she genuinely grieved losing him, he seemed to give everyone around him the short end of the stick, somehow even including himself. His alcoholism created a lot of strain for my mom, which led her to leave him several times over the course of the two years of their marriage.
My mom has since moved back to the nursing home in Falmouth, although in the short span of time since the beginning of the month she is already talking of moving out. She’s had an exceedingly hard time living in one place for any period of time, the exception being that she lived in the same place when she was married excluding times of separation. My main worry for her is that there’s nothing to occupy her time that she can engage in. I did burn a copy of learning Arabic for her which she enjoyed. She enjoys the language as well as the Quoran. She also reads the Bible a lot, but she says the reading gets boring after awhile. It’s hard to find things that interest her since she doesn’t have many hobbies. The other people at the home are far less functional than her, so it’s challenging for her to interact with them. From visiting her when she was there before, I can see where she’s coming from.
