i've been thinking about this article i read in LIFE magazine when i was nine years old, about this girl born deaf & blind & mute, a helen keller type, but not famous. how since her hands were meant to speak with and sign with and spell with, she hardly used them to identify things with touch ( Read more... )

not completely -- she used it to distinguish small differences, like telling one kind of fabric from another. stuff you'd usually use your eyes for.

it never occurred to me when i was 9 to wonder if she'd put anything poisonous in her mouth. haha.
