We got a terrible, terrible, terrible army of ants in our apartment last winter. The only thing that worked was Grant's Ant Stakes, placed directly on the trail. They're the only ant stuff I've ever found that actually works. You just have to make sure it's not where your kitties can get to it. We put them in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the dining room, the living room, the bedroom... everywhere, even on top of the medicine cabinet because they were coming out of the walls there.
The other thing was Formula 409 to obliterate the chemical scent trail put down by the ants. We just basically had to spray the hell out of everything and wipe down everything. I hate using that stuff because of the chemicals in it but it was literally the only thing that worked - the orange cleaner seemed to draw the ants.
The two in combination? The ants were (eventually) no match for them.
Oooo thanks for this. We have a summer pilgrimage into every corner of our house every year. No amount of housekeeping, putting away food, etc. seems to daunt them. They go for obvious things like jars of honey and etc. first, but the more you stash things away the more desperate they get. They show up on counters and dressers and places that have never seen food or moisture since the dawn of time. They are hearty and dauntless creatures!
The worst ant problem I ever had was when I lived in Sacramento - ants in carpets are awful, awful things. We had to completely clear out the cupboards and spray them down to get every single ant trail gone (they got into a ton of things in the cupboards
