Things to watch for are decreased energy level (they don't want to go outside, don't want to leave the warm sleepy spot at all, etc.), no interest in food, and no interest in water. Other than that it is very dog and situation dependent. Hopefully Merlin will give you some hints as to when it is time.

Wow - the new pup looks so much like the dog my family had while I was growing up.

That same one also went through a similar round of 'lack of control' (still had good diet, etc). Just like an old person needs to hit the bathroom more often, we found that we just needed to let him out more often to do his duty.

Generally, as long as there is no pain, he is still eating, is able to climb stairs and still get around (i.e all the normal dog routines), there isn't a whole lot of concern, but like was mentioned above, best bet is to bring him in to the vet to make sure there are no underlying causes.
