I dislike signing office cards for people. It's really hard to be original when 20 other people are writing the exact same thing. Condolence cards are the worst, because the way I see it, it's socially impossible to say what you'd really want to say. Can you imagine? "Dude, I am SO SORRY; this fucking sucks. I know what you mean about office condolence cards. And then I worry--can I say "You're in my prayers" at work or will that offend someone? And what's left after you leave that one out? Re: emergency gifts--good to have a few cards and small gifts on hand. In 5 minutes tonight I came up with the birthday gift I forgot--a 4-pack of tiny cute candles, a tiny tiny bar of patchouli soap, and a Japanese mint to ties them all together in one adorable package.
