on depression and intelligence

I was talking the other day with a friend of mine about the correlation between Depression and intelligence. He was saying that he doesn't think of himself as being depressed so much as being observant and looking at the world around us. I couldn't agree more, and as evidence, I offer the following infuriating link:

Ugh. As an ex-vet tech who assisted in a number of euthanasias, I have an extensive experience with a form of lethal injection that [i]does not cause pain[/i].

Why is it we can afford animals the luxury of a dignified death, but we cannot do that for ourselves?

Because doctors would have to prescribe it under current law, and can't do so accrding to the Hippocratic oath. Veterinarians don't have quite the same prohibitions (dogs are euthanised for agression, and it's sad but arguably the right thing to do in some circumstances), but can't prescribe for administration to a human. It's a legal tangle, and the court seems to think they found the easiest way out. Why they can't just make an exception for the state to procure pentobarbitol without an MD prescription I don't know; researchers can get it with a special license.
