2 points:
1: NAFTA is evil and not in any way a free trade agreement.
2: If NAFTA didn't exist this would not be an issue - the only issue here is the forced trading, not the buying of a company.

It is the buying of a company that is the issue - a controlling interest will end up with the texan company if they are allowed to go ahead. NAFTA is a big issue here, but also I think that having US companies take the profits of canadian resources is just wrong. Our country sells it's resources and we often talk about how bad it is that we don't produce end products, just sell raw materials, and now we won't even get the profits from the raw materials. I can see where this is going, another BC gov't extreme changeover, with Campbell branded the new Mulrooney and BC still up shit creek. Anyway, yes, NAFTA sucks, unless you are american, for the most part.

It's not wrong. Where a company is based doesn't matter. They will be, as they are operating in Canada, under Canadian taxes, paying wages to workers in Canada, and improving the infrastructure in Canada. What difference does it make that a giant evil corpartion that started in Texas gets the money as opposed to a giant evil corporation that started in BC? The only people that really profit are the big fat cat shareholders - not the working people in BC. And guess what? It makes no difference if the fat cats are in Texas, BC or on the moon - they're still fat cats. Normally I'd like that - cats are pretty cute - but these cats can be pretty ugly.

BC's electricity and gas used to be crown corps, and now they aren't - so before it wasn't the fat cats gaining by it in either country, it was the people. And I respectfully but bluntly disagree, I would much rather feed a canadian fat cat than one out of country - texan or otherwise. Because the interests (as Alexis eloquently put it below) hopefully and probably remain more in our country than the others if the fat cats are canadian.

hmmm...and i wonder why i was shocked when gordon campbell got back in...maybe it was my one anti-campbell vote that didn't get to be counted since i left the country...people here don't get the idea of free trade...CH has a lot of the perks but none of the economic junk that goes along with the EU...we do have worries about nasty german pollution flowing over though.

i think it's time to let the US know that canada's not there for the taking.

things could be worse
at least we're not Mexico...

ps: don't tell roland...we've got to keep up the pretenses that BC is the most perfect idyllic place to live and that we need to move back there asap.
he's already on about not getting a 13th month salary and 5-6 weeks paid holidays!
