Can I just say WHAT!?!?! What kind of a test is that!?!? And, how do they teach you!?!?! >.<
Considering I'm taking up Linguistics in Uni, and my department is the one that teaches the Asian languages, that up there, that is so NOT how to teach a language, much less Japanese! >.< -is appalled-
Um, I don't really learn anything at all there that I don't teach myself. Luckily this is the second language I've seriously taken (I've dabbled in others, but not really seriously). But her one avowed teaching method is rote memorization which prepares you to recite dialogues, but not understand what they are saying.
Also, she has them learn hiragana and katakana "at their own pace." Unfortunately since most of the community college students are really the learning kind, their pace is...don't learn anything at all.
It also doesn't help that I have a master's degree and most of the kids are straight out of high school and the professor wouldn't understand structured learning or varied activities if they bit her...
But I have learned about 50+ Kanji by myself and a number of advanced verb forms...because I get bored.
Wow. I admire your self-learning techniques. I have such a problem with that - like I find I learn more if someone's teaching me. Actually, that's wrong. It's more like, I learn more if I'm required to spend a certain amount of time actually learning. 'Coz, you know, me and procrastination/time-wasting techniques = self-learning is inefficient. XDD
If you want, I can find the digital copy of the book we use. I'm pretty sure there is one, but I can't remember who told me about it. I'll go look for it for you. :)
