although i've never played the FF games (with the exception of having started 10 but getting way too distracted to get past the first hour), I love your gaming rants <3
also: KINGDOM HEARTS MAKES EVERYONE AWESOME..except for poor kairi perhaps, who kind of always got left behind and missed out on all the adventures :(
You should finish FFX and do FFVII...they are both epic and my favorite of the FF games that I've played (FFVI is supposed to be awesome, too, but I have yet to play it). The first time I played FFVII I was like "wooooah! Awesome graphics!" (even though now they are blocks with blinky eyes) and in the first hour you get to be an eco terrorist, a crossdresser, and you fall through a church roof. Also, points for the only video game to ever make me cry

I agree with everything you say here. FF8 fails where FF10 succeeded. I couldn't find it in me to care about the characters and the story was convoluted. I don't like Squall as much as the other FF protagonists (though I love Leon from KH). I guess they were going for cool and stoic, but Squall just comes across as bad-tempered. I admit that Edea and the Squall-Seifer dynamic are kind of interesting, and the card game is addicting. The story ends up being confusing as opposed to engrossing the way FF7 and the others were. FF10 is my favorite because the character and the world are so fleshed out, and I like the aesthetic the best.
You just know nothing about any of the characters. And even what you find out about Squall is just gleaned...you don't ever have a sense of what it actually means for him (Hey look! After being an orphan I suddenly have a father! I know who my mother is! My girlfriend only exists because my father is a clumsy oaf! Hooray!). I don't even care about beating up Ultimecia...because what did she really do? Sephiroth killed my favorite character. Him I got mad at. Jecht is just devestating and complex as a "villain" (Although, arguably, there's a bit of handwaving as to Yu Yevon's and the Fayth's motives. FFX needs some epic pre-game backstory at some point. I'd play the Bevelle Zanarkand War

The ending is almost worth it. Its not entirely coherent (this is a problem throughout the game, though, so if you make it this far you're used to the smiling nodding and narrative hand waving), but it does have some satisfying moments.
KH Leon > Squall Leonheart. They figured out how to make him more compelling and, well, tolerable. Note to people everywhere: If you're creating a character driven story wherein you only develop the main character, make sure he is interesting.
Actually, my opinion of the game improved the second time around. When I first played it, I would have just said the story was crap.
You know, to this day I still remember being surprised by the fact that the real Shiva was neither female nor a deity that had anything whatsoever to do with ice...
It's funny because my best friend does nothing but rave about FFXII all the time and I just stare at her like, "Who the hell is Cloud?" (Sidebar: Fail) She's been trying to get me to play the game for years because the only types of video games I like are video games with intriguing characters and lots of plot, but I never believed her because she said it had action sequences. And in my past experience, action games usually don't have much going for them besides lots of fighting and cheesy graphics.
And yet...you are telling me that there is a game out there that involves both action and plot and has...dare I say it...character development?
...Holy commoner coffee. It all sounds too good to be true!
Sigh. I suppose I shall stop playing Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations for the billionth time--I am unhealthily obsessed with the Phoenix Wright franchise--and pick up a FF game. The way you describe your favorite ones makes them sound like a lot of fun...any suggestions for the
