Despite the topic, I promise it's nothing bad. It's more the implication of it
“Siblings are meant to kiss, aren’t they Arthur?”
He’s ten and a half years old, working obediently on that night’s homework, when his sister asks him this. She is nine and three quarters, standing in the doorway in a bright yellow dress, her hair brushed and held back neatly with a matching bow.
He’s not sure if he’s understood the question.
“Siblings. If they love each other, they kiss.” She steps into the room, walking delicately along the floorboards that never seemed to creek for her until she's standing right besides Arthur, almost the same height now that he's sitting. “And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.”
“Exodus 4:27” His answer is automatic and the way Winnie smiles at him because of it makes him feel just a little proud. “Is that what you and mum were reading today, for your lessons?”
They could only afford to send one of them to school at this point, and he was the oldest, not to mention a boy. He would grow to be man of the house, much sooner than most with his father gone, and so it was only right. Arthur couldn’t help but feel guilty about depriving his sister of her chance, and so he always did his best to teach her what he could during the night, when all chores were finished and the two of them were meant to be sleeping soundly.
As she nods her head, he watches a loose strand of hair fall across her face, the light brown a sharp contrast against her pale cheeks. He brushes it back behind his ears as she talks. “Aaron loved Moses, and they lived together for many many years. So siblings kiss when they love each other.”
“That’s only one story in the bible though. You shouldn’t base your judgment on a single passage.” She pouts at him, and he thinks that’s the end of that. He’s instilled on her a valuable lesson, and closed a possibly complicated argument.
Instead of agreeing and walking off, like she’s meant to, Winnie leans forward and presses her lips to Arthur’s. It’s a brief kiss, innocent in its simplicity, but it makes Arthur’s cheek burn a soft shade of red, his sister’s giggles as she scurries off causing something in his stomach to twist uncomfortably.
“I love you!” Her voice carries through the house as she runs down the hall, and it takes Arthur a minute longer than it should to shift his focus back to the equations on the page.
