[Character IC Information]
Character Name and Series: Ema Skye // Phoenix Wright
Name in Role Play: Ema Skye
Race/Ethnicity: Human/American
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Appearance: Ema dresses as any true scientist should. The lab coat makes the image, after all. Underneath she wears a pretty normal outfit for a girl her age, consisting of a purple button-up vest and matching skirt. She wears a pink button-down shirt with a red bow at the collar under the vest. But it’s the lab coat that sticks out the most, which would make her seem like the stuck-up, science nerd type if it weren’t for the cute little buttons and pins that adorn it. The bright pink goggles and pink messenger bag filled to the brim with all sorts of scientific equipment and test tubes add to this mixture of the cute and the scientific. As a whole the image is a rather strange one, causing one to wonder just what kind of scientist this girl is. A small portion of her brown hair is usually up in a bun, with the rest of falling down a little past her shoulders and two locks slipping forward to the front.
While this is her normal, everyday attire due to its practicality, Ema does have a bit of a flair for the traditional and as such she wouldn’t mind putting on one of those big dresses she sees most of the women in Allupato wearing, just once. But science comes first, and she could hardly work in such a huge and bulky dress.
Personality: ‘Ema’ is synonymous with the word ‘science.’ Really, look it up.
She became interested in science at an early age and this interest has continued to this very day. While originally her interest lay primarily in forensics, arising out of a combination of a love for crime dramas and a wish to work with her sister someday, her interest has since switched to an interest in the paranormal. She has not forsaken science, however. On the contrary, she has attempted to merge the two together in a way that will bring understanding to the supernatural world. This is easier said than done, as most people believe her to be another crackpot theorist or just downright nuts. There are also those who have been more vehement in their opposition to Ema’s studies. Even so, nothing will stop Ema in her quest to become a paranormal/scientific investigator!
Her love for science and her inquisitive nature, while making her a good and observant investigator, can make her seem at times childish. In truth, she really is as naïve as she appears. She hasn’t had much contact with peers her own age due to a difference in interests, but Ema is still too young to be fully comfortable in the adult world. She doesn’t really have much world experience (which is a reason why she decided to travel to Allupato in the first place). But she doesn’t let this get her down for long. She usually has a smile on her face, as she gladly explains to others her scientific views or as she dots down another note in one of her many journals.
Her interest in the paranormal presents a bit of a paradox. She originally became interested in the field in order to protect herself from her attempted murderer, but the more research she did the more she came to the conclusion that surely not all supernatural beings could be bad. It was true enough that Darke had been one of the “bad” ones, but they couldn’t all be like that. It’s a definite moral dilemma for her.
She enjoys the little time she is able to spend with her sister, Lana. When she was younger she wanted to become a forensic investigator in order to spend more time with her sister, but since then Ema has begun to forge her own path in life, as painful as leaving her sister is.
Outside of science she has few other interests or hobbies. A notable one is her love of all types of salty food-namely chips-and her various attempts to hide her obsession for these salty treats from others. She also enjoys imparting her knowledge of science to anyone who’s willing to listen.
Abilities/Weaponry: Ema is your average human, with absolutely no training in self defense or any weaponry. However, Ema is highly intelligent and thus may be capable of coming up with a solution to a dire situation in a pinch, as long as she can keep her cool.
Due to her background in the sciences, Ema is highly observant and is able to pick up on things that others normally might miss (unless, of course, she finds herself distracted by one of her chip binges).
Also, she has an arsenal of gadgets that, while usually used for research, could also be used as makeshift weapons if the need arises. (You really don’t want to get luminol fluid sprayed in your eyes.)
Weaknesses: Ema is your average human being with no real special skills to speak of. As stated above, she has no combat training so she would be pretty useless in a fight.
She’s also very young, and as such she doesn’t have much real world experience. Thus, she tends to be too trusting of others which could lead to her being easily manipulated. She tends to be rather outspoken about some aspects of her ‘profession,’ which could make her become a target for those who want to keep such things quiet.
History: Ema was born into a relatively normal family. However, tragic struck when her parents died in an automobile accident when she was still a young girl. As such, she was raised by her older sister, Lana, whom she loved and admired. Despite the large gap in age between them, Ema cared deeply for her sister and looked up to her immensely.
However, due to her sister being a detective the two didn’t get to spend as much time together as Ema would have liked. In hopes that it would bring her closer to her sister, Ema took up an interest in science, specifically forensics, in the hopes of helping her sister in her cases and at the same time being closer to Lana. She soon found that she also liked ‘science for sciences sake,’ and her casual interest grew to a lifelong passion.
One day as Ema was waiting for Lana in her office. They had intended to go out to dinner once Lana had finished her work. However, such plans were soon interrupted when the power in the building went out and someone burst into the room where Ema was waiting. That someone turned out to be Joe Darke, the serial killer who had been brought in as Lana’s and her partner’s new case.
Darke attempted to murder her, but Prosecutor Marshall soon entered the scene and began to fight with Darke. In the darkness and confusion Ema had trouble discerning what was going on. During a flash of lightening Ema caught a glimpse of the fight and what she perceived to be fangs gleaming on Darke’s face. When someone came near her she panicked and pushed him back, thinking it was Darke, but in reality was Prosectuor Marshall. After that she blacked out and knew no more of the events until she awoke in her sister’s arms.
The time after the incident went by in a haze for Ema. One memory that stood out was her talk with Miles Edgeworth. At the time he was one of the only people who did not look at her with disbelief as she tried to recount the events she had seen, like that flash of fangs. She was grateful to him for believing her story, though she did not know why he had any reason to do so.
Darke was to be put on trial for his crimes, but before the trial was set Darke mysteriously vanished. Ema heard only that he had gone “missing,” and she was suddenly gripped with a fear for her own life. However, she tried her best to keep such feelings from showing in front of her sister and threw herself into her studies. These studies had now shifted from forensics to the paranormal, as her research led her to the conclusion that Darke had been a vampire. Initially she had hoped that she would be able to learn something that would help her should Darke ever come after her, but over time she grew interested in all aspects of the paranormal and soon turned her focus towards it.
A few years after the incident, Ema traveled to Europe to continue her studies. Though she did not admit it openly, another reason for her decision to travel was to avoid any further confrontation with Darke, should he still be out there somewhere. She hoped that in a remote Italian town like Allupato she would be safe from him.
Through a few strange coincidences and mishaps Ema met Phoenix and soon took a job as his assistant, since their ideologies were generally the same.
Organization/Pack/Clan/Guild?: None, though she works with Phoenix.
