V-Day.

There was a time, approximately a year or two ago, when Rodney would have woken up on this particular day without recalling any particular significance about it. However, things had changed, and in fact he had spent a week or so frittering about this particular day. In the end, it all came to naught, or as close to naught as you could get - did a ( Read more... )

When Jill woke up, she couldn't figure out why things felt so strange at first. The sheets felt different over her and there was something lying on her face -- right on her eye, to be specific -- and the pillow under her head was strangely flat, like it was meant to be a decoration more than a real pillow. Sitting up, she brushed what appeared to be a flower petal off her face and then glanced around.

"What the hell..." The entire room was had been transformed into some kind of... love nest. There was no way in hell Rodney had been able to change the sheets without her noticing and Jill gave a soft snort of laughter at what she figured was the island's latest antics, then got out of bed to get dressed.

She was just tugging her shirt over her head when Rodney returned and she looked over at him, grinning in faint amusement. "How do you like what the island has done to your bed?"

"At least it's not heart-shaped," Rodney said, sounding surprisingly cheerful. For him, anyway. "Happy Valentine's Day," he continued, and held out the roses and chocolates. He'd eaten the entire contents of the top two boxes on the walk back, but it was the thought that counted, right?

"I, uh, actually got you some wildflowers as well, but I thought, since the opportunity came up...You like roses, don't you? Every woman likes roses," he added, a little nervously.

"Wow, roses," Jill said, taking the flowers from him, looking somewhere between surprised and pleased. Between the roses (and the chocolates, she couldn't remember the last time she'd had real chocolate) and hearing him say he'd actually gathered her wildflowers, too, she couldn't help but smile.

"Rodney, that's sweet," she said, wondering how many of the chocolates he'd eaten already. It didn't even matter, the fact that he'd brought them at all was enough. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Rodney said, beaming, (most of) his fears assuaged by her reaction.

"The Compound is even more garishly decorated," he continued, keen not to get too mushy. He wasn't good at it. "Red and pink and purple, it's absolutely disgusting. Whoever thought those three colours go well together clearly had some form of brain damage."
