[For Jill]

After his talk with Samantha, Rodney felt... not better exactly, but maybe a little braver. Just a little. Enough that he no longer wanted to run screaming into the jungle, never to return, anyways ( Read more... )

Jill hadn't been working, but she would tell anyone who asked that she was. It was a hell of a lot easier to say that than it was to say she'd been sitting alone in her hut with Dante, stressing about the fact that she was pregnant. And, yes, Rodney had been absent, but she had always expected him to come back eventually. That was what Rodney did in times of stress and while she wasn't happy about it, it was normal.

The knock was unexpected, so instead of calling for whoever was out there to just come inside, Jill got up from her desk and went to the door. Opening it, she was surprised to see Rodney there. Rodney with flowers.

"Oh," she said, looking at him.

"Hi," he said, and now that he was face-to-face with her he kind of wished the ground would open up and swallow him. Not a complete impossibility, on this island. He stared at his shoes expectantly for a moment, but when nothing happened, he looked back up at Jill again.

"I, uh...flowers," he said lamely, extending them. "For you." Smooth, McKay. Smooth.

Instead of saying 'thank you', Jill arched an eyebrow in surprise and said, "Really." And it wasn't that she didn't appreciate what he was trying to do in his Rodney McKay-esque manner, but she was genuinely surprised. She'd expected him to come back around, she hadn't expected flowers.

"I mean... thanks," she said, giving him a faint smile and stepping back so he that he could come inside.

"Welcome," Rodney managed. He was just relieved she hadn't screamed at him to go away yet. He'd been going over and over possible scenarios for this in his head and most of them had included that. And slapping. Lots of slapping.

When Jill stepped back he gave her a blank look. "What? Do I smell? Oh, you're - right, okay." He sidled inside, a little nervously, as if expecting an ambush from behind the door.
