I was surprised to find the Junie B. Jones is considered to be 3rd to 4th grade reading ability on several Web sites.

I personally loved Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish, Wayside School is Falling Down, anything else by Louis Sachar, or Beverly Cleary. All of these stories are humor based.

As for fantasy, a good start is the Babymouse Graphic Novels. Dragonslayer is my personal favorite.

Also Neil Gaiman's Wolves in the Walls. It was written for 5 to 10yr olds.

And last but not least, the Classic Starts collection. They rewrote King Arthur, 20,000 leagues under the sea, and lots of others for Third Grade Reading level, which Junie B. Jones is listed as.http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?sid=
