Name: Sephiroth
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
History link: FF Wiki
Age: 25 (physically), 30 (chronologically)
Canon point: After the events of Advent Children.

Personality:
"There was one SOLDIER named Sephiroth, who was better than the rest. But when he found out about the terrible experiments that made him he began to hate Shinra. And then, over time, he began to hate everything." - Marlene Wallace.

Sephiroth once had all the qualities of the great SOLDIER general.

Calm and collected, he could face anything, whether in battle or not, without revealing his intentions, his emotions, and his weaknesses. He could kill without blinking an eye in the name of the ShinRa Company and SOLDIER. Many Wutai troops and monsters fell beneath him, leaving the man largely unaffected by the savage nature of warfare. Likewise, Sephiroth bore other characteristics of an ideal general. He was ruthless and highly intelligent, a born strategist who could also hold his own when it came to a battle. In many situations, he would naturally take the lead and people obeyed. He had a sort of presence around him that demanded they do so…

He was accused often of being too sure of himself, too prideful. Perhaps he had the reasons to be so. He was, after all, the undefeated General Sephiroth, the first SOLDIER, and the perfect SOLDIER. In truth, Sephiroth was never an egotistic man. He had confidence in himself, but his silence towards others was more due to his inability to see a reason for interaction rather than his possibly considering them not worthy of his attention. The friends he had he readily considered equals, the subordinates he served with, he cared for, and those with authority over him, he respected.

These traits were deeply ingrained into his personality, as they lasted even after the fateful days in the basement of ShinRa Manor in Nibelheim. There, Sephiroth’s personality was inorexably altered.

"I knew ever since I was a child, I was not like the others. I knew mine was a special existence." - Sephiroth.

He discovered the truth behind his birth - Project S, Jenova, and Professor Hojo’s experiments on him. Sephiroth came to see Jenova as his mother, he came to believe that she was the last of the Cetra and, therefore, that he was part of the race as well. He came to see himself as a God among men.

Sephiroth grew determined to avenge his supposed race, to destroy the planet at any cost because the people of it destroyed the Cetra.

With Jenova’s influence, Sephiroth descended into madness. While he retained the calm and collected nature of the general he once was, he killed more easily and with a new bloodlust fueled by the desire for revenge for the people whom he thought himself to be part of. Ironically, the Cetra would never have done such a thing. Sephiroth’s only goal, only reason to return repeatedly became to take the planet for “Mother” and sail it through the universe, spreading Mother’s influence to other worlds as well.

Throughout, he also developed a certain obsession with the single person who was ever able to stop him: Cloud Strife. Where Cloud was, while Cloud still remembered Sephiroth, Sephiroth could not die. Cloud was Sephiroth’s link between the Lifestream and Gaia, and Sephiroth eagerly took advantage of it.

And in the end, he became convinced that he was the God walking among the mere mortals. In the end, he was determined to win.

“I will…never be a memory.” -Sephiroth.

Powers/Abilities:
Sephiroth was infused with Jenova’s alien cells prior to birth. After birth, regular mako treatments further enhanced his physical capabilities, from his tolerance for pain, extreme temperatures and poisons to his endurance and strength. Sephiroth was the only one of the original SOLDIERs who was not considered a failure, despite the clear effects of the Jenova cells on his physical appearance - Sephiroth has a single black feathered wing on his right side, allowing him to fly.

Along with supernatural physical qualities, Sephiroth also possesses the ability to use materia, a sort of magic. In game, he has Fire, Ice, Lightning, Earth, Revive and Restore all mastered.

He’s also capable of several signature moves: Super Nova, which resembles exactly what its name suggests, and engulfs his opponent in flame, Heartless Angel which, in game, brings the opponent’s health down to 1HP, and Octaslash, which consists of eight (though sometimes fewer) quick slashes of the sword to damage the opponent.

For purposes of Vegas, Super Nova and Heartless Angel do not operate on a full-scale basis.

Prose sample:
Perched on a ledge of one of the many crumbling buildings, Sephiroth looked over what others had called the strip.
This place - Vegas - reminded him of the Midgar he’d left behind in ways. The people managed to remain on the streets, even in places where he could not imagine running into anyone else. The buildings were mostly destroyed, with several key exceptions. The pavement was cracked, the plants were dead, and the animal life was almost unheard of. In a strange way, Sephiroth felt at ease here.

It was superior to the Lifestream because he once more had a physical form and a breathing, living body. He needed not to rely on the incompetent attempts of the remnants and the connection with Cloud Strife that kept bringing him back to the physical realm. Once more, Sephiroth was corporeal and it felt…wonderful.

Furthermore, what he had seen of this city proved that this world, too, would suit his purpose. He could just as easily take this Earth away from the God Loki, who foolishly believed he owned it, as he could take Gaia away from its so-called Gods. Earth could serve Gaia’s purpose as well. Sephiroth could take the planet and sail it through the galaxies for Mother… Any planet would do, as they would ultimately all become his.

Still, there was one thing wrong with this world he was inexplicably brought to. The one thing was presently directly across the street from Sephiroth’s perch, which was why the tall man had chosen the wreckage in the first place. Cloud Strife was there and Sephiroth wanted to observe in silence for the time being…

Cloud: the Planet’s little toy that wouldn’t give up in his attempts to stop Sephiroth once and for all. Ah, it was almost a pity that Cloud, too, was here, for it only meant that Sephiroth had something to stand in his way even on Earth. Still, Cloud’s presence meant very little in the grand scheme, the overall scenario. The puppet was nothing more than a distraction and something that Sephiroth would, eventually, have to kill or tame to suit his purpose.

It would be a shame if he had to kill Cloud Strife, he would greatly prefer to keep him. Eternal suffering should be apt recompense for a lifetime of resistance

Mother would allow a good son to keep a pet, would she not?

A silent smirk spread across Sephiroth’s face as he watched the blond in question walk down the street. Now was as good a time as ever for introductions, was it not? After all, the last he saw of Cloud Strife, the latter came out victorious in their battle. It would not happen again.

Unfurling his single wing, Sephiroth descended from the skies, landing delicately behind his target.

“Cloud.” Sephiroth said the name in a tone Cloud knew well. In one word, that tone, that voice Sephiroth used with Cloud conveyed everything Sephiroth wanted to say to him. Cloud was his, a puppet, a part of him, and barely relevant without. With a slight inclination of his head, he continued, “It’s good to see you once more.”
