[Though Javert spends a good amount of dinner time glancing distractedly every now and then to the stone glinting on Naomi's left hand, he chooses not to discuss what is on his mind until after the last dish is cleared away. When the beautiful woman returns from cleaning the dishes, she will find Javert with an eight by eleven inch dossier atop the table.]

I checked in at City Hall today about the ceremony, [Javert drops with little segue or fanfare.] You will remember that a license application must be finished about one month in advance of the marriage. Here! I have brought most of the paperwork with me.

[He pushes the envelope across the table toward Naomi, his head tilted ever-so-slightly and brow arched.] When do you want this done?

[Though he asks, it is clear that Inspector Javert has little intention of waiting very long. For once he is less than patient.]

[Well, the woman silently concludes to herself while returning to her seat beside him, at least Javert had sense enough to not bring all this business talk up during dinner.

Though the envelope is slipped right in front of her, Naomi makes absolutely no move to touch it yet. In fact, both of her hands suddenly slip under the table to rest on her lap lightly. That ring is getting too damn distracting to keep out in the open apparently.]

Are we in a hurry now? I haven't even begun to give it any thought yet. It's barely been a week. [Her head tilts to match his.]

What do you think?

[At least Javert's gaze would no longer involuntarily drift toward the sparkling token on her finger that indicated his complete claim on her.]

I don't see any reason to wait, [Javert murmurs through his teeth, his eyes locked on hers.] We would have modest plans, yes? We are not inviting the entire city to gawk at us. One month is enough time to finish the arrangements for a private affair. Barely, but enough.

No, no. [Naomi gives a small shake of her head before settling back comfortably in her chair, small hands still on her lap.] We don't need to even consider doing anything as extravagant as Tamaki would ever suggest. Modest is more than fine.

[Her dark eyes flick down towards the untouched envelope briefly before meeting his again.] You're very serious about this, aren't you?

[Javert casts her such a skeptical, flat expression. The Chief Inspector may have an unusual sense of humor, to say the least, but this is not something he would joke about. He asks abruptly, jaw tight,]

Do you doubt me? [The slightest of curves at his lip.] Come, now! You would be justified if I had bought you a wooden trinket instead of diamonds. Don't take my purchase lightly.

[And her hidden hand finally reappears, Naomi giving the modestly-sized ring a quick look over as if to double check that the gift really was made of real diamonds and not something that shimmered equally as much. Javert would certainly get the ring chucked back at him quickly if it was anything fake.

Happy with what she sees (good for you, Javert), Naomi finally relaxes.]

I'm not taking any of this lightly. It's just going a little fast, don't you think? We haven't even had time to talk about it.

[Not that they'd exactly had more time in their false life, but this is very different.]

I do not agree. It is a respectable length of time.

[Javert's brow contracts, and after several seconds of contemplative silence he sits back and folds his arms casually across his chest.]

Speak. I will hear it.

There are a few things. [Naomi frowns, resting her hands on the table top. This is exactly the kind of openness that she is striving to have between them now, of course, but there are some things the woman needs to say that may not be quite as simple to just come out with.

May as well start with the smaller, less important parts.]

For one, and I'm well aware that I'm repeating myself, but there is no possible way we will be having any children. [She shoots him a look. Javert should know exactly what she means.] I expect you to take care of that.

[Less important??? This is a rather major procedure you're asking of Javert, Naomi. Any hint of a grin drops from his expression. He looks at her closely.]

You expect me to get that humiliating operation?

[He presses his lips together in a deep grimace.]

When? Before the ceremony? I cannot take that medical leave. [His eyes drift downwards, his thoughts racing ahead without him. He is already muttering mostly to himself while Naomi looks on,] Yet if it is only a day or two I may request a week-end and recuperate the hours during the week...

[Naomi snaps back almost immediately. As inwardly pleased as she is that Javert is even considering doing this incredibly huge favor for her, the doctor does not want to see him hurt permanently afterwards for not allowing himself to fully heal. Javert was always stubborn like that and she wouldn't let it happen.

She leans in closer to the man, reaching out to touch his own hand gently.]

It isn't a procedure that you can recover completely from in only a day or two, especially with how stressful your job is. If it's impossible to do beforehand, than I suppose I'll have no choice but to wait till after. I just want it done, but I understand how busy your schedule is.

[Look at how hard she's trying, Javert. She's not even attempting to suggest that the actual ceremony itself could be pushed back.]

[Javert jerks his chin up and peers at Naomi through narrowed eyes. The unhappy Chief Inspector has a lopsided frown on his face.]

Fine. Granted, [decides he in an imperious, rough tone. Javert's word should be enough for Naomi, considering how honest and honorable a man he is. If he says he will do it, then he will do it.] It will be done. I have no desire to breed, same as you.

[Except contrary to Naomi's wishes, he is already mentally calculating how he can get around using any medical leave to get this accomplished. And how to get it done with the utmost discretion, of course.]

Is that your only concern?

Thank you. [Javert's word that it will be done and soon is more than enough for the woman who should hopefully become future wife. Naomi is, after all, well acquainted enough with the Inspector to fully understand just how honest a man he truly is. It's one of those personality quirks of his that has both good points and bad ones.]

No, I'm not finished yet. [That soft, feminine hand on his hasn't budged yet, even if this request is much more lighthearted than what will come next.]

I know how much you hate it, but I'm asking you to take a few more days off from work. [Yes, Naomi is obviously abusing her newfound power over him while she can.]

[The change in Naomi's tone does not slip by Javert unnoticed. Slowly, the frown on his face melts as he studies her face over the table. He leans forward, cupping his chin with his free hand, and watches her intently, a light dancing in his eye.]

You expect a vacation. That is it, isn't it? [He adds dryly,] M. Edgeworth shall be accommodating, I think. On those grounds. But I will not make it long.

[That sudden light behind his expression brings out the slightest hint of a smile on Naomi's face. So far this pre-marriage business seem to be going rather well, amazingly enough. Who knew the stubborn Inspector was actually capable of compromising?]

I wasn't expecting to be able to steal you away for weeks, so that's perfectly acceptable. I just you to myself for a few days if this is really going to happen.

Then it is good that I expected you to ask me something to this extent. [If last time they 'married' was any indication, those precious few days of getaway were a deal-breaker in her acceptance of this engagement. For this round, he had already planned ahead for a modest weekend escape - the beginning of any month would certainly be more convenient than the unpredictable latter half. It wouldn't do to have a disaster spring up in the middle of their marriage ceremony.

However, something about her speech does incite the return of a frown. If?]

Now, stop speaking in uncertain terms. You have accepted me, whether you will call it a misfortune or not. I do not have much to offer as a husband, but that does not mean I will not grant you reasonable requests.

You are still allowed to change your mind. [As far as Naomi is concerned, this entire marriage idea is highly unnecessary and a waste of both funds and time. While perhaps it would serve to make their relationship more permanent and defined, she`s been quite content with the relaxed way they have been going about things for the last six months. Having Javert over every other evening, sometimes meeting him for lunch or dinner out in the city at random hours, occasionally even going for days without seeing him... She was fine with that, even as disturbed as she`d been with recent disappearances.

But Naomi was well aware that it was important for Javert (and his respectable reputation) to make this official and legal. And luckily for the man, the doctor cares enough about him and keeping him in her life for now, that she`s seriously entertaining the idea of marriage to keep him happy. If he would agree to her terms and the few sacrifices she asked of him, she would somehow manage to live being his wife ( ... )
