The Arrow in Siren Shapes & Moulthrop

I have tried rereading Siren Shapes three times now and still do not understand the 'arrow' and truck story (pages 622-623 in the NMR). I think I understand the overall concept here about hypertext by association, in linking certain events together and how Les here links the trunk in his story, making it some sort of arrow to the other part of the ( Read more... )

Yeah, I had a hard time with that part too, but I know he was making allusions to the Odyssey with his mentions of "Lotus-Eater giddiness" and "rosy-fingered dawning."

However, I'm not sure why he's connecting Homeric tropes with this story, unless I missed something in my reading as well. Perhaps this is an instance like the "Garden of Forking Paths" where things are interwoven into the text.

There has to be a central thread to all of his stories. Well, I think there should be at least. I guess I always assume an author has a certain point--or a certain story line that he is attempting to accomplish. Who knows. . . .We can't crawl into their thoughts.
