thoughts on: once upon a time (season 2)

I did this after my initial marathon of S1 last fall, so I thought I'd do one for S2 before the new season starts.

3 Favorite Episode(s)
The Crocodile (Hook/Rumpel-centric)
And Straight On Till Morning (Hook/Bae-centric)
We Are Both (Regina-centric)

Thoughts: The first two should give you an idea about what I enjoyed most about this season. I ( Read more... )

I couldn't agree more about Hook!

The writers fully admit to changing the direction of the story in middle of season which is what caused things to be so jarred and uneven. It also caused the lack of emotional follow through, the dropping of characters without word and characters (Regina) making downright stupid choices to make the plot work. Season two had some great episodes and took the characters to some great places (I loved Regina in 2.22 making decision to save Henry/Everyone and wanting to die as Regina), but there is no denying it was screwy in places. I really wanted to know Emma, Snow and Charming feelings about each other. It wasn't till the end of season that we got any Emma/Charming scenes at all. Hopefully season three will fix those mistakes. After all the series is trying to find it's feet post curse.

August, which is perhaps WHY I hated this episode so much. I really hate how August's story ended in season two. Things had so much promise at the end of season one. Then we jump into season two and no really cares ( ... )

Yeah, I think I read that somewhere as well. As excited as I am about Neverland, I wish they hadn't rushed through everything else to get to it. They started to tell a story, and then it seemed like they got bored and didn't want to tell it anymore. So Cora dies shortly after getting to Storybrooke, we're introduced to Greg only to forget about him, Neal has like one scene with his father, and Hook spends episode after episode just getting knocked unconscious...and Ruby, Belle, August, and Jefferson all disappeared (although at least the Jefferson thing was due to SS' other jobs). Like you, I would have loved to have seen more Emma with her parents (especially Charming). Also, I was enjoying the separation in the first half of the season. I think the writers said they had originally planned to do something with Ruby/Wolf, which would have been cool! We also might have gotten some more depth added to Mulan and Aurora ( ... )

You hit the nail on the head with the Tiny episode. It wasted time that could've been spend on other important characters who are important to the plot. I liked Hook well enough in the start, but I loved him when finally got to know him! To see his story and what drives him. You're right Regina wouldn't be anywhere neary as poplar without her flashbacks. We need to get to know these characters! Season one was time for random FTL characters stories. Season two should be about the main characters and moving them forward! I would love a David/James story. I find it very interesting as it proves nurture over nature. Which proves that Regina wasn't a bad mom to raise Henry to be good person. After all James had same blood David did, but with bad parenting he turned into a bad apple ( ... )

Yeah, I agree. As much as I love Regina, I really don't get why she got 5 (partially 6) flashback episodes while Charming only got to split one with Snow in the beginning of the season.

That's also what bothers me about Belle's character. I get loving someone, and wanting to see the best in them...but I wish she would call him out more often. You can be nice and still have a spine, Snow and Charming are proof of that. That's why it's always been hard for me to warm to Belle, because it feels like the writers created her simply to bring out the 'good' in Rumpel, or comfort him when he's upset. They tried giving her some back-story, but the second was iffy and the first one felt very heavy-handed.

It bummed me out to not get more sassy!Jefferson. I would have loved to see him, Regina, and Hook all in the same room together!

Thoughts: Belle's position didn't change from last year, despite "character growth" (which still felt more like fodder for Rumpel's character).
I completely agree with this.

Speaking of dear, sweet Rumpel...he came out of this season the worst. I liked him well enough after S1, I downright hated him after this season. Not because of what he did to Hook because that made sense narratively, but because of the free passes everyone keeps giving him for being a lying, murdering, patronizing asshole. Yeah, the less I say about him the better *twitch* Greg is just annoying.I love Rumpel - big fan - but right now I really don't like him. He does get a free pass on everything! The Charming forgive his evil doing and let him be a part of family more then Regina when she was trying to find redemption. Rumpel left Henry to die in 1.22, Emma knows that Rumpel is one really behind the curse, and at no time has he ever stopped his wicked ways other then when Belle is around. Regina repented and risked her life, but was treated as less then Rumpel ( ... )

Well that's part of the issue.....he makes a great speech (he had a couple with Belle this season that even won ME over) but it's all talk. He doesn't change, it doesn't even try. At least Regina TRIES. Yet she is continually punished for her bad actions and he's forgiven for almost all of his. Neither Belle nor Bae seemed to care that he murdered his first wife. Not a single word on it. Belle was actually DEFENDING him after finding out the truth! Maybe that wouldn't have bothered me as much had he shown any remorse...but not once has he done that (until it actually cost him something ( ... )

It drives me insane that Rumpel gets away with everything and makes no change, but Regina tries and gets nothing but pain for it ( ... )

I do have a Hook/Regina soft spot (even have a half-finished vid around here somewhere)...even if I doubt they'll happen. At the least, I weirdly want them to be friends/frienemies. Absolutely on Bae/Emma. Too much water under the bridge for me to ever see romance there. I'm still hoping we see Wendy again, in all honesty.

I like Aurora/Mulan/Prince...but I get why people are wary of their return. Aurora is like a little puppy and I just want to make sure she gets her happy ending!

With you on Bae. I like him as Bae....and like him as an adult eith Henry or Rumpel...but hate him in most other respects.

I like all of those scenes as well! The finale had a lot of good moments.

I'm really getting into the ship, but I really have doubts it'll happen. I'm pretty sure Hook/Emma is going to happen or at least be flirted with all season till Bae comes back. I'd be happy with Hook/Emma if didn't fear the writers were setting up a Emma/Bae true love crap. I love Bae, but Emma deserves someone who will treat her better. I think he left her more for selfish reasons (like not wanting to see his father ever again/or be involved with magic) then to let her for fill his destiny. I don't think he treated her all that great in the current timeline either. He didn't really say sorry, he was jerk about whole 'jealous ex lover' thing. I kinda felt the 'I love you' came out of no where. I get that the 17 year girl somewhere deep inside might still be in love with Neal, but I can't see the hurt, battle scared, smart adult Emma still being in love with him. He messed her up pretty good. It's been ten years! Sorry I'm ranting ( ... )
