I had a similar experience whilst in London. I thought that I'd have no birthday party because I was abroad, and everyone who'd actually celebrate with me was at home. Well, everyone from LMU on my floor actually did get together and celebrate with me. It was a wonderful surprise. Jared also canceled his con appearance on my birthday so... needless to say, I got very, very inebriated.
There's no right or wrong on your birthday. You don't have to do anything except what you want to do. If doing nothing makes you happy, then do it! But I urge you to make it a treat for yourself. Go to work, but come back, watch your favourite TW episodes and order your favourite food. It doesn't have to be elaborate, but of course, above all, spend it with friends since I know they mean everything to you.
