AN: Yes, this is fluff. Shameless fluff and cuddling. :)
"You," Shirogane said sternly, "are working too hard." He handed over a steaming mug of warm tea, holding it in front of Kai's face until the younger man took it off him, pulling a face at him in the process.
"It's winter," Kai told him with exaggerated patience, perched on the end of his bed, his fingers wrapping tightly around the mug. "It's always busier during winter, especially around the Winter Festivals. People fall, people slip, people come down with colds and don't bother wrapping up and cough all over other people and--"
"Alright, alright," Shirogane interrupted, sitting down in the one empty chair he could find. He was sure there was actually a seat somewhere under the pile of assorted miscellany occupying the other chair, but he wasn't about to go rummaging around to find out. "It's busy. You still need to take better care of yourself." And who'd have thought he'd wind up having to tell a Healer that.
Kai gave him a disgusted look, but nonetheless took a sip of tea, sighing happily as the warmth sank in. "Don't let being right go to your head," he muttered. "It's annoying."
Shirogane grinned back, not bothering to hide it. He felt comfortable enough around Kai now to relax more and to know where the lines were drawn on what was acceptable for teasing (or nagging, depending on who you spoke to). He picked up his own mug of tea from off the small table next to his chair and took a drink himself, lounging back in the chair in contentment.
The peace was disturbed by a knock on Kai's door and Shirogane frowned as Kai went from sleepily content to immediately ready for anything. "Come in," Kai called, awkwardly perched as if he were ready to spring into action. The door opened and Kakeru walked in, heading straight over to the bed where he flopped down next to Kai, the door slowly swinging shut behind him. Kai relaxed and grinned down at his friend. "Tired?"
There was an inarticulate mumble that may have been a yes, but even Shirogane's trained ear couldn't be sure. "Why do people do stupid things?" Kakeru complained a moment later. "If they just used their common sense they wouldn't end up needing to see a Healer."
"Because," Kai completed, "people are stupid. And if they weren't we'd be out of work." It had the air of an oft-repeated conversation and Shirogane shifted uncomfortably in his seat, wondering if he should leave. Of course, that was when Kakeru sat up and finally saw him, his expression of surprise, while comical, slowly replaced by embarrassment.
"Oh, sorry," he muttered, edging forwards off the bed, "I didn't realise--"
"Sit down," Kai said firmly. "You need rest, Kakeru, you're working too hard."
Shirogane muffled an undignified squawk at the sound of his own words being tossed around, as if Kai were being virtuous and not trying to work himself into exhaustion. Kai shot him a glare, then made a few strange gestures that Shirogane eventually translated into 'Get Kakeru some tea, will you?' He sighed but complied, thankful that at least the teapot was still relatively warm on the stove.
By the time he turned back, mug of warm - not hot, but decently warm - tea in hand, it was to find the pair lying back on the bed and wrapped around each other like a couple of puppies. He sighed again and carefully put the mug back down. He couldn't find it in him to be jealous but he did have an uncomfortable twinge at being left out.
"Where're you going?" Kai protested around a yawn, lifting his head to give Shirogane a sleepy frown. "Get over here, already."
"But--"
"I'd do as he says," Kakeru chimed in, not even looking up. "When Kai wants cuddles he gets them. Doesn't matter how much you protest." Which Shirogane doubted Kakeru had ever really tried.
"You shush," Kai told his friend, jabbing him in the side. "I'm not that bad."
"Yes, you are," Kakeru replied. "I roomed with you for five years, remember?"
Kai huffed and Shirogane couldn't help but smile at the not-really-annoyed expression on his face. "Shut up," Kai muttered sulkily. "You'll scare him off otherwise."
Shirogane blinked at the sudden reference to himself. "Me?"
"You see any other thick-headed Bards in here?" Kai retorted. "What part of 'get over here' was difficult to understand?"
Shirogane held up his hands in innocence and took the few steps necessary to take him to the bed. "I don't think three people will fit on there," he observed, wondering, not for the first time, how he let himself be talked into these things.
"Sure we will," Kai said, lying back down. "Might be a bit snug but we'll fit so stop trying to get out of it."
Rather than protest that he wasn't - partly because he was - Shirogane tentatively sat down on the far side of the bed, taking up the left hand side while Kakeru took up the right. "Alright," he conceded, somehow managing to get into a semi-comfortable position. "You win."
"He always does," Kakeru murmured from the other side of the bed. "You get used to it."
