This could not be happening. In no universe could this be happening. Kai paced Sae's living room restlessly, trying not to count how many steps wide the little room was. It didn't help that the room wasn't quite a square and part of him kept wanting the numbers he wasn't counting to add up; anything that meant he wouldn't have to deal with the man sitting quietly in the corner, staring out of the window, his knees drawn up in the chair, his arms wrapped loosely around them.
It wasn't possible, he told himself. People didn't just come back from the dead - unless they were vampires anyway - and Shirogane was most certainly supposed to be dead. Yet here he was, hiding in the apartment of a human girl and Kai didn't know what to think. He had so many questions but he didn't dare ask them: how did you even ask a member of your royal family why exactly they weren't dead when everyone thought he was?
And why was he hiding in the first place? Shirogane would have had any number of bodyguards if he'd gone back but he hadn't. Instead he'd chosen to stay sequestered away here, away from the Supernatural world. Kai couldn't really blame him - it wasn't safe being a Supernatural at the moment, every day carrying with it the nagging worry that maybe you would be the next target of whoever was hunting them down - but Shirogane had responsibilities and he was neglecting them. He'd once been a leading figure in attempts to foster co-operation between the Human and Supernatural worlds and yet now... now he was broken and Kai didn't have the first idea how to help.
"Can you stop pacing, please?" came the quiet question and he stopped abruptly, flushing at the reprimand.
"Sorry." He threw himself down into the other free chair and stared fixedly at the door. He had a job to do, he reminded himself fiercely, he couldn't let himself be distracted. Washio might have called it babysitting duty but Kai couldn't be so blasé about guarding his lord; whatever he was hiding from, whatever had left him so shattered, was nothing to take lightly.
"Ask whatever you want," Shirogane said quietly a few minutes later, looking over at him from his seat by the window. "You must have questions."
"I'm fine," Kai said hurriedly. "Really, Highness. I'm not going to pry or anything."
Which went against everything he was, but seriously, the kind of questions he had weren't the ones you could just come out and ask. And besides, he couldn't meet Shirogane's eyes for long; something about them was just plain unnerving.
"When you want to ask them," Shirogane replied. "Just ask. You have the right to."
Kai simply nodded, his throat dry. Even if he'd wanted to, what could you say to that?
"And don't call me 'Highness'," Shirogane finished softly. "I'm no-one's lord anymore."
