A lady today asked if I could make a sign telling customers not to use their cell phones inside the store. I'll get right on that....

But no, people who talk loudly and annoyingly on cell phones in public places don't pay any attention to signs. And if they're going to be rude, they won't take kindly to anyone pointing it out.

Catherine writes: This is so typically Seattle. Instead of going up to the offending person and asking them not to talk so loudly on their cell phone, this lady wants there to be a general policy advertised and enforced by the store. Then if it's not followed, she'd want the staff (i.e. you) to be the bad guy in telling the cell phone user off. This is the sort of thing that leads to litigation.

I understand -- I don't approach strangers and tell them to stop doing X Y or Z -- mostly because I'm afraid they'll yell at me or whip out a gun and shoot me or something.

But at the same time, putting the entire burden of maintaining a civilized society on a few underpaid and overworked bookstore staff members seems... unfair.
