Scimitar on hiatus

The Scimitar Smile web archive is currently down for repairs and renovations. We are experiencing some technical difficulties with our current webhost and will be moving to another domain (although the address of the website will remain the same; you should not need to update your bookmarks.) We expect the archive to be back up in one to two weeks ( Read more... )

I just got an email from the hosting domain that says everyone's domains were down, and it'll be sometime today -- at earliest -- before it's back up again. On the plus side, we will be getting credit for the downtime, and that gives me a little more time to prepare a seamless transfer from old host to new.

If you have a chance to do another post asking for feedback on these, that'd be great, to let me know whether there's interest in additional functions or if anyone has ideas on other functions:

some kind of search function, or filtering option for searches -- by author, rating, keyword, main character, genre?

comments posted on the site instead of emailed? or emailed as well?

a way for hosted authors to upload their own chapters?

anything else?

(Not saying I can do all of them, but at least if I know what really gets people excited, I can at least arrange the priorities -- with the emailed-review function being top of the list after waiting for so long... sigh.)

Speaking for myself, I think the search function is the single biggest priority on the wishlist. Search by author seems redundant given that each author has their own page; search by rating... similarly so, given the way that the pages are organized.

Search by main character would be good, though, as there's currently no fast way to look for fic centering on rare characters (Rose, Heiderich, Gracia, what have you.) Search by pairing would also probably be useful for a lot of people, for the same reason.

So basically something that categorizes story by pairing and then also lists "rare characters"...

What if I set it up so the stories were basically tagged (much like we can tag posts here) and so one can search the tags, whatever they are? In which case, would you prefer, as the admin, to have sole tagging ability, or could authors also edit/add tags, or could anyone, or what?

If it would be possible to give authors sub-admin privileges, at least with access to their own fic sections, then that would open up a whole range of possibilities, such as possibly updating their own files in the future.

Honestly I'm a little meh on that idea, not because I don't want them to have the ability to do that but because it would start to break up the conistancy of the archive if everyone was uploading with their own summaries, warning labels, etc. However, if the authors could edit their own fics to add or change tags, to fix typos, or to upload new drafts, that would make everyone happy I think.

Oh, the review function was actually broken?

Huh.

I thought my computer was just being stupid. Good to know.
