When I saw my buddy Wickey, from Basic, for the first time since graduating, a year after the fact, it was the strangest thing. We shared so many memories, but the fundamental difference that we were missing eight months of each others' lives was shocking. Even friends at home, I kept in better contact with while I was at school, so I felt like I didn't have that much to say, but with Wickey: I felt, as Vonnegut would say, "Disconnected in Time

The bond still exists, a connection on whatever level, but it's as if our realities are barely able to interact, needing time to reconnect
The sense of pure confidence in self is excellent too, but of course buts up against the need of humanity to be a social creature.
