Texas energy de-regulation

I'm going to be scheduling electricity turn on in the new place soon. I haven't had to set up service since the de-regulation here in Texas. According to www.powertochoose.com, I can get Green Mountain (100% renewable, wind/water) for about the same average rate as TXU ( Read more... )

They're all crooks. If you can get with a company that will lock in your rate for a year or more, do it. I switched to GEXA because their rate per kWh was the lowest, but rates across the board just shot up. Mine jumped from 9.5 to 13.5 cents/kWh a month or two ago.

The problem with fixed rate that I have is that my lease is going to be a nine month lease. And all the fixed rate plans I've seen charge an early termination fee in the neighborhood of $150 with no plans to fit my lease term. :/ So, I will have to go with a month to month plan just to keep from paying an extra $150.

Now, if I went ahead and absorbed that cost anyway, I'd end up paying an extra $17 per month to make up the early termination fee. So I'm wondering if I would be saving enough with a fixed rate plan to offset that cost.

Are you a gambling man? It's not unlike trying to decide when and where to fill up your gas tank. You just don't know what the energy rates are going to do for sure, but my money is on them continuing to go up. I wish I could've locked in my 9.5 cents/kWh.

Yeah, I really like the idea that I'd be paying to support Green energy. But, realistically, I don't want to be hanging myself later with $200 utility bills for a two-bedroom apartment. That's as much as people I know pay for powering their entire house.
