Today was pretty cool. I was sorta floating through school because I was tired, but that was okay. After school I went to Bethesda to meet up with Shelley. We walked down all the way to old Bethesda to some coffee place that went out of business. Then we went to Pines of Rome for dinner, Starbucks for caffination, and then we saw Stick It! I'm not sure I see what you mean themusicalfruit April 29 2006, 19:27:18 UTC
I completely disagree. Not because I hate hispanics, not because I'm a racist, or anti-immigrant (hell, my ancestors were all immigrants, Irish, Swedish, the works), but because I am not in favor of allowing foreigners to move here illegally. To paraphrase my sister, illegal immigrants living here drain our resources; they work for unlivable wages which then require them to benefit from our welfare and hospital system. Also, people do not have the right to simply move from country to country as they chose, they have to follow the guidelines set out by the country's government. It's also entirely unfair to the immigrants who did come here legally. If they want to be Americans, that's fantastic, the more the merrier. But it's this attitude of "I am a (fill in the South American country here)" that gets me. If you want to be an American, you must be an American first and foremost. It's great to have pride in your culture and background, but to be a part of this country, you must embrace it.

I agree with "themusicalfruit" (i don't know who it is). I'm not racist or anything, but it should be done legally, no matter what their nationality is. I have no problem with more people. I welcome them to the country. It just really isn't fair for the people who went through all the paper work, classes, etc. to be getting what we've paid taxes for and they haven't. If they are so keen on living in America, they should follow the American ways and the American government.

Also, "The Star Spangled Banner" is USA's and USA's *only*. It should be in english. That's our main language here. I understand if they don't speak it, but if they are a citizen of USA they should make a point to *learn* the language of their country. It's the patriotic thing to do.

First off, most [illegal] immigrants pay taxes.

And, I do agree with you, they should learn English, but we, as Americans, especailly considering we are one of most powerful countries in the world, have a responsibilty to learn other languages such as French and Spanish. It's just courtesy. Most people in Mexico, even if the haven't immigrated, know at least some basic phrases in English. Most Americans can only muster a simple, "hola".

I do respect your opinion, and I see where you're coming from, but the comment I was making about the webpage was more dirrected at the comments to the post about the Star Spangled Banner. All of the comments on that webpage are directed at Mexicans, and most of the stuff is just blatantly ignorant and MEAN. The people who immigrated illegally to the United States are NOT, by ANY means, all Mexicans. A few of them have nothing to do with politics or economics, a lof it's just pure xenophobia.

American school systems are making it possible now for kids to start learning different languages, such as Spanish, French, German, Chinese, etc. for children in schools now. And more and more adults are learning different languages for occupations like doctors and lawyers and others.

I agree, the article mostly pointed the finger at Mexicans, which wasn't nice. And what they were saying was mean, and I know that the people who immigrated illegally are not all Mexicans. But still, "The Star Spangled Banner" is an American thing, and should be kept in english.

I don't have a problem with anyone translating our anthem, but from what my mom and I have heard, whoever's making "Nuestro Himno" is using completely different words- like how God Save the Queen v. Our Country Tis of Thee has the same tune w/ different words. Only in Spanish. And trying to pass as the same song. I don't like that, but hell its america, deal with it.

Dude, I don't have a problem with illegal immigrants - but I still don't think we should have a separate Spanish National Anthem. That in itself is not necessarily racism. I mean, as the guy says - would you expect the Mexicans to be happy if we asked them to translate their National Anthem into English?
