I've played both the simExchange and HSX, along with a number of other play money prediction markets and Tradesports. I have to say the simExchange is definitely the best of the play money prediciton markets and in many ways better than Tradesports (though that is a real money exchange so its more difficult to compare).

The simExchange has real stock market mechanics where traders trade against each other, not against a computer. You can't actually short on the HSX (you buy an opposite contract instead), you can on the simExchange. The simExchange has a much better design in terms of usability. Pricing data and game data is all there right in front of you. It has a slick AJAX trading system. HSX is a bunch of static webpages. I don't know how you can even compare the two. The simExchange "leaves everything up to the traders" which is the way it should be because that's how the real stock market works. Check out the article they put out today that explains how game stocks work: Reply
