So, I've been enjoying these series of pieces by comix artist Rutu Modan in the NYT, and now that they've removed Times Select, they're freely viewable to everyone. Queen of the Scottish Fairies is SO AWESOME, I may die from it.

I wish it had been published before #1 wanted to wear pink nail polish. Pop Phooey was not amused.

I had to tear myself away from the comments on that one. Pink has always been my eldest nephew's favourite colour and he went through a stage of putting towels and ribbons on his head and calling them "hair". His parents are trying to walk the same line between being progressive and tolerant and not exposing him to ridicule.

Part of me--a lot of me, actually--is just really pissed off that there is a line. At some point in high school, I came to terms with the fact that I was simply going to be teased no matter what I did, so I might as well stop fretting and do the things I enjoyed. But that's the kind of lesson everyone has to learn for themselves and age seven is probably too soon for most people.
