As near as I can tell, they picked people to impersonate who represented different eras of popular music from the 50s until today, including:
Elvis (first generation rock and roll)
The Beatles (British invasion rock)
Jimi Hendrix (Psychaedelic music)
Parliament (70s funk)
Van Halen (glam rock)
The Clash (punk)
The Misfits (80s metal)
Def Leppard (hair metal)
Nirvana (90s "alternative")

It was def. The Misfits was the bit where they had their hair greased into little spikes that came down over their faces - they're the only band that I can think of that ever did that. The suit with the top hat would be Sammy Hagar, although now that I think about it, that was more his style during his solo career than when he was with Van Halen.
Good job spotting Twisted Sister - I completely had missed them!
