Gee, thanks.

The good news is, I got the job.

The bad news is the pay. Eeuuuugh. Ordinarily I'd say no, thanks, but the economy being the way that it is, I didn't - which of course is precisely why they lowballed me like that. It is a significant pay cut, and it's on a 1099, and it's in Alexandria.

I'm taking it and I'm still looking.

work, money, jobhunt, work drama

OK, what's a 1099 and why is it evil?

1099-MISC Report of Non-employment income.

Used to report for payments to those who are not legally employees.

Frequently abused by skeevy/skinflint employers to cheat the tax man by evading their share of the Social Security tax (pushing the burden instead onto the 'not technically' employee).

On the other hand if they are going 1099, then they should have no problem with you submitting invoices under The Exchange letterhead and EIN.

Regardless: yay for billable hours!

Yes, I'll be an "Exchange employee"...but generally, 1099 rates go up over those you receive on a W-2, as they don't take anything - like health insurance or taxes - out of it.
