Tonks decided that she should get used to Anatole. She needed to find out where everything was. She needed to see what was what. It was going to take an awful lot of footwork.
She thought exploration was a perfectly logical thing to do. If she had to apparate, and eventually she would want to, she didn’t want to get spliced because she didn’t know the city well enough. Tonks had already been told there was a shortage of Healers. If she lost an appendage, she might not get it back. There were more reasons than just apparation alone. It was a matter of safety.
It was almost a matter of boredom. She wasn’t good when she had nothing to do. Tonks didn’t so much have a book to read. It was settled. Once she woke up in the morning, Tonks grabbed her Forge and was out the door.
She visited a couple of bookstores. She visited the market where she slipped on a wet piece of pavement and fell onto her backside. Tonks visited the center of the city. For a long time, she just stared through the Door hoping to see someone familiar on the other side. When she didn’t, Tonks turned away and continued on her exploration.
Eventually, she came to a tree made of blue metal. She sat down on one of the two benches. The sun was starting to set and if she had wanted to, she could have easily given into panic. It would have been so easy to throw herself a little pity party for one. Tonks was far from home and in a situation that was entirely unfamiliar to her.
It would be unbelievable easy but she wasn’t going to do that. What would Moody say? CONSTANT VIGILANCE! What would he say after that? He’d say to get up off of her arse and get to work. Tonks did have some good things going for her. First and foremost, she had her wand. She had her mind. There was Hermione and possibly Remus, even if he was acting a bit odd. For the moment, she had a place to stay. Tonks knew that she’d be fine but it was going to take some work.
A job, she’d have to find a job. Tonks liked to eat and if she wanted to continue, she’d need to find a way to pay for her meals. Clothing wasn’t a problem, she could just transfigure her black jacket if she wanted to and as for washing them, well, that was what a scourging charm was invented for. Once she found a job, she could find a proper place to stay. Then she could see about making her life somewhat tolerable while in Anatole.
When she thought about making her life tolerable, she found her thoughts drifting towards Remus. Tonks didn’t know what to make of Remus. He had behaved very strangely. She didn’t think him happy to see her either which was understandable. Tonks wasn’t sure that she’d be happy to see her mates pulled away from their homes and lives to be stuck here. She sighed. It went beyond that though. Tonks had seen things on her Forge. Things that made no sense and she still wasn’t sure what to make of it.
Tonks was also unsure of what to make of Remus’ Patronus. It resembled Padfoot down to its last whisker. She had heard that the shape of a Patronus could change if that person went through an emotional upheaval or if you were in love. Maybe that was the case between Remus and Sirius. If it was, it made quite a few things clear, crystal clear in fact.
She toyed with the idea of sending him a message using her own Patronus. Tonks wanted to know why he had acted so bloody strange. Why he was being almost rude and for Remus Lupin, being almost rude was nearly unheard of. In the end she rejected that idea. Maybe he needed space? She didn’t know. Tonks had never been good with subtly.
A brief gust of wind blew past her. It caused her lilac colored hair to whip about her face. She reached up and pushed the errant hair back behind her ears. There was a lot that needed to be doing and she supposed she needed to get started on it.
She’d start on that just as soon as she rested her feet a bit.
