The Magick Show! lumenrelegandus May 13 2011, 17:07:54 UTC
[Follow the purple hair. Once in Anatole he'd have to remind himself not to. Now...

As the show started, he slipped in at the back to stand and watch.

The point for him was not to be seen. So it was rather pointless to nod in approval or recognition. He did so anyway.

It was straightforward, uncomplicated magic-and well it should be. As with any magician, the real trick was not the magic but the presentation. And that was cheeky and playful and utterly charming.

He watched a purple flower petal flutter and drift to land on his sleeve. He was still looking at it before he realised half the audience had filed out.]

[She failed to notice him during the show. Tonks even failed to spot him once the show was over but there was a reason for that. A few people wanted to talk to her. Who was she to not oblige them?

After most of the people filed out, Tonks started to clear up the after-magic effects. That's when she noticed Remus sitting in the back. She wondered if he was doing being strange. Unfortunately, there was only one way to find out.

She walked over to Remus. Her short purple and gold dress sashayed with her hips. Tonks liked the way it moved when she walked, plus it was one of her favorite colors.1]

Wotcher Remus. Come to watch me flaunt the secrecy restriction and then stomp on it?

[She smiled at him. Tonks tilted her head to the side a bit before reaching up to push back her long, lilac colored hair.]

I think I made a mistake, making my hair too long. What d'you think? Should it be shorter?

1. Yeah, no. She is incapable of having a favorite color. She has several but if she had to narrow it down, it would definitely be in the ( ... )

[he smiled, though he sounded like he was quoting something. (He was: himself)]

Old systems no longer apply.

[he picked the petal off his jacketsleeve, twirled it in his fingers, and levitated it. It spiraled and rose up from his hand to hover near her hair. Of course they matched.]

I think you look smashing. Which is not the only reason I enjoyed the act.

You do, do you? Thank you.

[There is a stupid little smile on her face. Tonks is not and never will be the type of woman who needs compliments about her appearance. She knows the score. However, every now and again, she does like to hear it especially when it's honest.

He doesn't seem to be acting strange. Maybe he is finally over his bizarreness? She hopes so.]

So what've you been up to? Anything interesting? Dare I even ask if you've been up to anything fun?

[Knowing she's never waiting for a compliment just makes her reaction on receiving them all the cuter.

Yet again: down, boy.]

Yes, tremendous fun: I've taken over administrative responsibility of the Clinic. [Holy cow, self-deprecating sarcasm -- as if Sirius were in the room.]

Speaking of which... should I be preparing to do any deforestation or antler removal this evening?

[ooc: S'okay, I adore XIII. So cute.]

Oh, have you? I should think you'd have a lovely bedside manner. I know something about that. I have a bed on permanent reserve at St. Mungo's. D'you think you'll like it?

[It's only a slight exaggeration but her comment does have several grains of truth in it.]

Well, that depends on how bad the hecklers get. If they get too bad deforestation and antler removal might be the least of it. I haven't had to sheep anyone yet.

[Make no mistake, when she says that she hasn't had to sheep anyone yet she means it in the literal sense. Tonks doesn't see much wrong with transfiguring someone to teach them a lesson. It's always a sheep though. It's a shame if you ask her. Tonks has never managed to turn someone literally into an ass.]

Think I'll like- [the bed? -no, no.] -the Clinic. …Yes. It's not what I anticipated doing here, but… it's helpful.

I'm… also… teaching.

[It doesn't matter at what time of life she knew him; anyone who knew him ever, knew that was everything to him.]

I hope to continue.

[A more mischievous smile; positively Marauderlike.]

If my Clinic schedule allows. So I take it the jinxes won't wear off on their own. In which case… please go easy on the livestock, for my sake?

[And because he still didn't quite trust Anatoleans-trusting Scorched less than Natives-not to never scapegoat and lynch.]

You're teaching? That's wonderful! Harry and Hermione told me that you were completely brilliant in the classroom.

[Her eyes light up with genuine delight. She is glad to hear that in this miserable place he found at least one thing that made him happy. The 'completely brilliant' bit was her own summary of the glowing things she'd heard.]

Oh, they'll wear off on their own. I just may have not specified to the poor sod how long they'd last. You may have a visitor asking to remove them, you may not. I can't really say.

[Tonks completely fails at looking innocent. It's a complete lie. She knows exactly how long those jinxes will last and she doesn't feel a bit sorry about it at all.]

Alright Remus, you've persuaded me. I'll try to be on my best behavior. I do mean that. I will try but you know me, never a Prefect, never a Head Girl, all thanks to my inability to behave.

[he ducks his head, smiling, as much at the living idea of Harry as at the praise.

Gives her a shrewd look at her obvious knowledge of the hexes, but shows his own relief that it isn't permanent.]

Fair enough.

[Not quite, he's still uneasy for her to put on such displays, despite all the other Scorched flashing their powers, but it's a reminder of the boy who was incapable of misbehaving, even when it was called for.

Which feeds into, at the last, his giving a rueful smile]

As opposed to the prefect appointed solely to force his best friends to behave.

[Tonks just grins when he ducks his head. She thinks she should find more ways to make him do that. The act is completely and utterly adorable. She wants to see it again.]

I will try to behave, Remus. I promise.

[Her promises are better than some. She feels that she is a good judge of the audience and will know when to stop. Despite having an air of ineffectiveness, she is anything but.

She holds up her hands. Tonks does not like it when Remus is too self-depreciative. It's best to stop him now.]

You were in charge of a sorry lot, Remus. It wasn't your fault that you couldn't ever get them to behave. Given the circumstances, it's a wonder that you didn't lose your hair or something.

Besides, I'm sure that wasn't the only reason you were appointed.

[she got him to smile, that time]

Well... I think I needed their influence as much as they might need mine... there's something to be said for-

[his hand had started up but ]

-being capable of both.

[ he caught himself; lowered it again. Before it would have brushed a strand of her hair out of her face.

He puts his hands in his pockets, which automatically makes him shuffle back a bit.]

I should get back to my post.

[had lapsed a moment but meets her eyes again]

That really was... a very fine performance. Thank you for... making me remember home.

[She supposes that it had been too good to last. For a few moments, he had seemed his old self. She has kept her eyes on him but out of the corner of her eye, she saw his hand and saw it lower. Tonks doesn't say it but she thinks he's back to acting strange again. One of these days, she might find out why.]

I suppose you did Remus.

[Tonks smiles. It is almost an apologetic one.]

Good luck at your post. I really will try to be on my best behavior.

[Her smile fades a bit. She lowers her head slightly.]

I'm glad you enjoyed it but I hope that I didn't make you terribly homesick.

[laughs; old self back for one more glimpse, for now. Lapsing in and out not ideal, but still an improvement]

Homesick's where I live, Tonks. I thought you knew that about me.

[as the smile changes, the old self again fades, but he's not the inexplicable, upsetting version that keeps bewildering her; he smiles at her from this world, across unknown time, but the difference is linear… and might be good.]

The trick is to realise that that means, I've got it safe.

[makes up for the cryptic by taking a hand back out of his pocket and lightly touching her elbow. It's congratulations, it's "thanks", it's "don't worry"-and, for now, it's "goodbye". He heads out of the tent.]

[She doesn't say anything to that. Tonks simply lifts her head and smiles a bit. After he had touched her elbow, she looks down at her arm and then back up at him.]

Take care of yourself, Remus. Please.

[She says to him and watches him depart from the tent.]
