[part of shirley's duty as a healer and one that works in anatole's middle class clinic is to take risks: risk being injured for the sake of others, risk losing herself to these demons for them, risk the life of one for the other. it's unfortunate, but she has to prioritize who she can and cannot save. those struck with a rod are left quickly, it being so far out of her power and the girl that can reverse it being too far to reach. and some are too far gone even without the threat of becoming a cat beast from hell. that part of her magic is no more here, and it seems it was their fate, anyway ( ... )

[Part of serving and protecting Anatole includes getting what injured she can to the already overflowing clinic. There are other makeshift places - people that can tend to some wounds and not others - but this one is the closest, and getting out of the line of fire is imperative to making sure this boy makes it. She's no good to him or anyone else if she's dead, so she's ditched her bike carelessly near the street and half-carrying the native teen through the door ( ... )

[the organ and muscle and flesh finally knit together, the light disappearing. the man clutches his chest, feeling wet blood but no wound and marvels; and the woman sobs, relieved - she pays neither of them any mind, as another native touches her forearm for attention. frightened but not particularly injured. nor is her companion. shirley motions to another medic, already aware of the newest arrival to the clinic.

she stands and makes her way to the bed and lilly, unrushed but steady. there is a slight stain of blood on her hands, but she doesn't notice, not even when annalee rushes to her side. she grips one of shirley's hand, but the fabric of the cloak prevents something strong; it's more like a two-arm cling to shirley's forearm.

vanity has no place in these moments, and though she could afford it one, she doesn't. it means something that shirley is taking her duties so seriously now.]

oh my god idek how did this become a thing i don't even have an icon for this photosbythebed May 29 2011, 23:06:54 UTC
[She sees them coming toward her - and for a moment her vision's split between the advancing figures (that's good, they need to get the hell away from---) and the sudden motion of a woman as she lurches toward the window, (no) fingers erratic against the glass as she pushes it the rest of the way open and hangs her head out of it to be violently and loudly ill.

On the tail end of the retching comes the growling. And it's sure as hell not coming from the woman (who has backed up and slumped against the wall), it's the seven - no eight, because it's rising up - foot tall beast she thought she'd seen pacing just behind the fractured light of Shirley's magic.

It's blinded at the moment - and though she's got no prior experience, it's a fair fucking guess that vomit in the eyes burns.

She's already halfway to the window as it takes an angry, yowling swipe.]

what have we wrought? thenobledie May 29 2011, 23:30:26 UTC
[see, this is why overflows are bad. people can't vomit where they are suppose to and do dumb things - and this is only half a thought because shirley pulls away from annalee, kneeling by the woman to make sure she won't be ill again, in an instant. she didn't hear the growling, but it wouldn't have kept her, anyway.

shirley feels the threat, head raising a second, as her mind rushes to make a decision - she pushes annalee (stupid girl, why did you follow her?) and pulls the woman further away from the window.

annalee falls on her back. far from the hellcat, at least. and instead, it's the flesh of shirley's shoulders and upper back that is torn open.]

[Fuck.

Yes, overflows are bad.

Also falling into the realm of bad things is an enraged, partially blinded nightmare-creature that doesn't exactly go down for the count when it's full of bullets---

---but that's okay, because this gun shoots fire. After the last assault when Ivy Rose had gone missing? She can't say she's actually surprised when the sky starts raining cats.

(Rods. Rods that become cats and beget more rods.)

Without really thinking, she reaches out toward Shirley - and sorry if her fingers are right in that fresh wound - pulling, making an attempt to roughly yank her out of the way as she raises the flamegun toward the screaming cat.]

Move!

[The smell that is about to result? Sorry, guys.]

[shirley winces, the pain not being particularly severe or close to the worst she has had before but the sudden touch being surprising. she moves, though, taking the ill woman with her.

- ohgod, she wants gag, and guess who is vomiting again. at least this time it's into a trash (full of used medical supplies). shirley half-stops, back to lilly and the cat, one hand against her nose and mouth. annalee rushes and clings to shirley's dress; she presses her face into the woman's thigh, crying, and the hand that threads into the girl's hair is hardly enough to comfort her.]

embrace the smelly hellcat overlords? photosbythebed June 8 2011, 01:38:24 UTC
[Again?

Really?

Not that it doesn't seem like a great idea because burning fur and the stink of sick makes for the worst melange ever - as it blackens and melts and thank god backs up as it burns.

Is there another setting on this gun? Hotter fire? Quicker fire?

It's stupid, so stupid, but she takes a step toward it, hoping to force it outside where it can lie down and burn and stink and die. Away from all things flammable - why isn't there an instant incineration option? (Why? Probably because she hadn't asked. She doubts that much is out of the realm of tunnelcraft possibilities.

But she doesn't doubt for long, because well, more important things.]

You have magic?

[No time to think about the ridiculousness of that question. Again: IMPORTANT.]

More can't get in. [Sounds like: OH MY GOD CLOSE THE HOLE IN THE WALL.]

[shirley makes a noise, but unfortunately, lilly is not versed in shirleyisms to know that means "are you serious just shut the window yourself." but lilly looks worse for wear, and the smell is awful; and of the two, shirley is the logical choice.

so she shoves annalee away - enough to break her death grip but not enough to hurt the girl - and, swiftly, closes the window. outside, she can see the elior's skin in a blurred movement and is satisfied his attention has been caught to take care of the possibly still-living creature.

she could vomit right now...]

[She is not shutting that window, Shirley. She is too busy making sure it is dead and not about to shoot anymore ...people-transforming cat rods - (it never really gets easier to think about, but there's lots of time for it to sink in) and by the way, this fire? It doesn't seem to catch on to anything else - and is nicely contained to the very stinky cat.

She's smelled some pretty terrible things, some of them came with the job, and some of them notsomuch.

Yeah, this is still just about the worst.

And then it's done and she's backing up and turning to Shirley, and the child. Bending down to check on the woman that's slumped against the wall, brushing the hair back from her face and slipping an arm around her to help her away from the wreckage.]

[look, she shut it, okay! enough with the narrative arguing that is shirley's fault, anyway. gosh.

she turns away from the window, swallowing down bile and the sudden feeling she needs to sit. of overwhelming sensations to experience in anatole, the stench of burning vomit and fur and flesh is not one she expected, and even as she walks away from the window, shirley feels lightheaded. but annalee running into her, crying and talking incoherently and clutching at her legs, is enough to ground her.

still, there is a moment of hesitance in her step, but then, it passes - and one hand at annalee's back to acknowledge her (but not soothe her), shirley begins walking for the injured boy lilly brought inside.]
